Wide Brimmed Hat & Twin Handled Bag Pattern

BAG

Materials:
HIAWATHA Belastraw Art. 35, 4 tubes Main Color (M) and
HIAWATHA Multicolor Belastraw Art. 35X, 1 tube for Trimming (T)
HIAWATHA Ring Handles No. 6564, 2 rings
Plastic Bag Base Insert—6" x ½"
Steel crochet hook No. 0

Gauge: 5 sc = 1"; 5 rows =1"

BOTTOMInside—With M ch 4, sl st in 1st ch, forming a ring. Rnd 1—7 sc in ring. Mark beg of rnds. Rnd 2—2 sc in each sc (7 incs). Rnd 3—* 2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Inc 7 sc each rnd (not directly over incs of previous rnd) until piece is scant 6" across and there are 104 sts. Sl st in next st. Next rnd—Through back loops, sc in each st. Through both loops, work 1 rnd. End off. Outside—Same is Inside but do not end off. Work 1 more rnd (be sure both pieces have same number of sts).

SIDESRnd 1—Working through both loops of both pieces, and inserting plastic base, work * sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st. Repeat from * around, thus joining (130 sts). Work sc even to 10" from join­ing. Sl st in next st. End off.

TRIMMINGDots (make 25)—With T work same as first 3 rnds of Bottom. Sl st in next st. End off, leaving 8" end.

Loops (make 10)—With T ch 10, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 7 ch, con­tinuing along other side work sl st in each ch. End off, leaving 8" end.

Finishing—Divide top edge of bag into 4 equal sections. Sew 5 loops evenly spaced across 1 section (over 1 ring handle). Sew other 5 loops over 2nd handle (on oppo­site side). Fold remaining two sections to inside for gussets and tack at center top of folds. Sew on dots, scattering hap­hazardly over Bag as shown.

HAT

Materials:

1½ yds. velvet ribbon ¼" wide
Steel crochet hook No. 0

Gauge: 5 sc = 1"

CROWN—With M ch 4, sl st in 1st ch, forming a ring. Rnd 1—6 sc in ring. Mark beg of rnds. Rnd 2—2 sc in each sc (6 incs). Rnd 3—* 2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Inc 6 sc each rnd (not directly over incs of previous rnd) until there are 108 sc. Work even to 5¾" from beg. Sl st in next st.

BRIMRnd 1—Through front loops only, sc in each st. Remainder of Brim is worked tightly with double strand. Rnds 2 and 3—Through both loops, sc even. Rnd 4—Inc 20 sts evenly around (128 sts). Rnd 5—Sc even. Insert a marker at center back. Rnd 6First short row—Sc even to within 4" of center back, sl st in next st. Turn. Rnd 7—Skip the sl st, work sl st through back loop of next 5 sts, sc through both loops to within 4" of cen­ter back, sl st in next st. Turn. Rnd 8—Skip the sl st, work sl st through back loop of next 5 sts, sc through both loops to sl sts of previous row, covering the slip sts work sc in next 5 sts of row below, sc to end. Rnd 9—Sc to sl sts of previous row, covering the slip sts work sc in next 5 sts of row below, work in last row inc in every 5th st to 4" from end, sc to end. Rnd 10—Sc in each st around. Rnd 11—Sc to within 3" of center back, sl st in next st. Turn. Rnd 12—Skip the sl st, work sl st through back loop of next 5 sts, sc through both loops to within 3" of center back, sl st in next st. Turn. Rnds 13 and 14—Repeat rnds 8 and 9. Rnd 15—Sc even. Sl st in next st. End off.

TRIMMINGDots (make 26)—With T work same as first 3 rnds of Bag. Sl st in next st. End off, leaving 8" end.

Finishing—Press Brim with hot iron through dampened pressing cloth. Sew on dots, scattering 11 over Crown and 15 on Brim, as shown. Tack ribbon around base of Crown, finishing with bow at right side.
