2nd, 3rd and 4th Rows—1 s c in each s c.

5th, 6th and 7th Rows—2 s c in 1 st s c, 1 s c in each remaining s c.

8th Row—2 s c in each of the 1st 2 s c, 1 s c in each remaining s c.

9th Row—Working in s c increase 1 s c at beginning of row.

10th Row—Repeat 8th row, then work 3 rows even.

14th and 15th Rows—Repeat 9th row.

16th Row—Increase 2 s c at beginning and end of row.

17th Row—Increase 1 s c at end of row, then work 3 rows even.

21st Row—Increase 1 s c at beginning and end of row, then work 4 rows even.

26th Row—Repeat 8th row.

27th Row—Decrease 1 s c at beginning of row (to de-crease: insert hook in st, pull loop through, insert hook in next st, pull through, yarn over and pull through all loops at one time).

28th Row—Decrease 1 s c at end of row, then work 2 rows even.

31st and 32nd Rows—Repeat 28th row, then work 1 row even.

34th and 35th Rows—Decrease 1 s c at beginning and end of each row.

36th Row—Decrease 1 s c, 1 s c in each of the next 8 s c, sl st in each of the next 6 sts, 1 s c in each of the next 8 s c.

37th Row—Decrease 1 s c, 1 s c in each of the next 4 s c, sl st in each of the next 8 sts, 1 s c in each remaining st decreasing 1 s c at end of row. Without breaking yarn work a row of s c all around increasing as necessary to keep work flat, working a sl st in each of the 8 sl sts at top, break yarn.

HULL—Wind half of a ball of Green “Star" Pearl Cotton into another ball and using 2 strands, ch 25, sl st in 2nd st from hook, sl st in next st of ch, 1 s c in each of the next 3 sts, 1 d c in each of the next 4 sts, 1 tr c in each of the next 5 sts, 1 d c in each of the next 4 sts, 1 s c in each of the next 4 sts, sl st in next st, 4 s c in next st, working on other side of ch, 1 s c in each of the next 5 sts, 1 d c in each of the next 3 sts, 1 tr c in each of the next 4 sts, 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts, 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts, sl st in each remaining st, break thread. Work 2 more hull sections in same manner and sew to mat at illustrated.

STEM—Using 2 strands, ch 9, s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each remaining st of ch, ch 1, turn.

2nd Row—1 s c in each of the next 4 s c, sl st in each of the next 4 s c, break thread. Sew to mat as illustrated. With White embroider seeds using a running st.
