MEDIUM MAT-TOP SECTION—With Red and No. 7 hook, ch 7, join to form a ring, ch 3, 2 d c in ring leaving last loop of each d c on hook, thread over and pull through all loops at one time, ** ch 3, cluster st in ring (cluster st: * thread over hook, insert in ring, pull through and work off 2 loops, repeat from * twice, thread over and work off all loops at one time), repeat from ** 6 times, ch 3, join.

2nd Row—Ch 1 and over each loop work 5 s c, join, break thread.

3rd Row—Attach White in same space, ch 4, 1 tr c in each of the next 4 s c, * ch 3, 1 tr c in each of the next 5 s c, ch 7, 1 tr c in each of the next 5 s c, repeat from * twice, ch 3, 1 tr c in each of the next 5 s c, ch 7, join, break thread.

4th Row—Attach Red in same space, s c in same space, 1 s c in each of the next 4 tr c, * 2 s c, ch 3, 2 s c in next ch 3 loop, 1 s c in each of the next 5 tr c, 1 s c, 1 s d c, 3 d c in next loop, (s d c: thread over hook, insert in st, pull through, thread over and pull through all loops at one time) ch 5, sl st in top of last d c for picot, 3 d c, 1 s d c, 1 s c in same loop (corner), 1 s c in each of the next 5 tr c, repeat from * twice, 2 s c, ch 3, 2 s c in next loop, 1 s c in each of the next 5 tr c, 1 s c , 1 s d c, 3 d c, picot, 3 d c, 1 s d c, 1 s c in next loop, join, break thread.

Work a 2nd motif in same manner joining it to 1st, motif in last row as follows: attach Red and work 1 s c in each of the next 5 tr c, 2 s c, ch 3, 2 s c in next ch 3 loop, 1 s c in each of the next 5 tr c, 1 s c, 1 s d c, 3 d c in next loop, ch 2, join to corresponding picot of 1st motif, ch 2, complete picot, 3 d c, 1 s d c, 1 s c in same loop of 2nd motif, 1 s c in each of the next 5 tr c, 2 s c in next loop, ch 1, sl st in corresponding picot loop of 1st motif, ch 1, 2 s c in same space of 2nd motif, 1 s c in each of the next 5 tr c, 1 s c, 1 s d c, 3 d c in next loop, ch 2, sl st in corresponding picot of 1st motif, ch 2, complete picot, 3 d c, 1 s d c, 1 s c in same space, finish motif same as 1st motif. Join 3rd motif to 2nd motif and 4th motif to 3rd and 1st motifs in same manner. Join remaining motifs in same manner having 12 motifs 3 x 4 for medium size mat.

BACK SECTION—With White "STAR" Rug Yarn and No. 00 Hook ch 35, d c in 4th st from hook, 1 d c in each remaining st of ch, ch 3, turn.

2nd Row—1 d c in each d c, ch 3, turn. Repeat the last row 9 times, break yarn. With Red and No. 7 hook, work a row of s c all around working 5 s c in each corner, join, break thread leaving an end. Thread into needle and sew to wrong side of top section leaving the Red row of top section extended over the back section. For small mat work 9 motifs for top section having 3 motifs lengthwise and 3 motifs crosswise. For back section with "STAR" Rug Yarn and No. 00 hook, ch 28 and work in same manner as medium size mat working same amount of rows. For large mat work 15 motifs 3 x 5 for top section.

For back section with "STAR" Rug Yarn and No. 00 hook, ch 45 and work in same manner as medium size mat, working same amount of rows.
