J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 5 balls of any color.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 5.
6 small buttons.
3 yds. of velvet ribbon, ¼ inch wide.
1 yd. millinery wire for bonnet.

Gauge: 8 d c make 1 inch; 4 rows make 1 inch.

DRESS No. 5020-A

Size 3

Starting at neck edge, ch 96 loosely, to measure about 13 inches. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in each ch across (94 d c, counting turning ch as 1 d c). Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: * D c in each of 6 d c, 2 d c in next d c (an increase). Repeat from * 11 more times, d c in each remaining d c, d c in top st of turning ch (106 d c). Ch 4, turn. 3rd row: Make 2 tr in 1st d c, holding back the last loop of each tr on hook; thread over and draw through all loops on hook; ch 2, * skip 2 d c, 3 tr in next d c, holding back the last loop of each tr on hook; thread over and draw through all loops on hook (a 3-tr-cluster made); ch 3. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 2, cluster in turning ch (36 clusters). Ch 3, turn. 4th and all even rows: D c in each ch and in each cluster across. Ch 4, turn. 5th row: Same as 3rd row, ending with ch 3, cluster in turning ch (47 clusters). Ch 3, turn. 7th row: Same as 5th row (62 clusters). Ch 3, turn. 9th row: Same as 3rd row, making 2 ch's for the first 2 sps and the last sp (82 clusters). Ch 3, turn. 11th row: Same as 3rd row, making 2 ch's between each cluster (108 clusters). Ch 3, turn. 13th row: * D c in each of 6 d c, 2 d c in next d c. Repeat from * across. Join with sl st to 3rd st of ch-3 at beginning of row. Ch 3, turn (this is right side of dress). Work is now done in rnds instead of rows. 1st rnd: * Skip 1 d c, d c in next d c, ch 3, d c in same place as last d c. Repeat from * 23 more times (this is Right Back), ch 13 (for underarm), skip 87 d c (sleeve); continue in pattern across next 99 d c (Front), ch 13 (for other underarm), skip 87 d c (sleeve); continue across next 46 d c, skip next d c, d c in same place where first ch-3 started, ch 3, join to 3rd st of ch-3 first made. 2nd rnd: Sl st in each of next 2 ch, ch 3, * d c in 2nd ch of ch-3, ch 3, d c in same ch. Repeat from * around to chain at underarm; make d c, ch 3 and d c in every other ch (6 patterns). Continue in this manner around. Join last ch-3 to 3rd st of ch-3 first made. 3rd rnd: Sl st in each of next 2 ch, ch 4, * d c in 2nd ch of next loop, ch 4, d c in same ch. Repeat from * around, join. Repeat the 3rd rnd until piece measures 14" in all, or desired length, along center front. Then work as follows:

1st rnd: Ch 3, * 3 d c in loop, skip 1 d c, d c in next d c. Repeat from * around, join. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, d c in each d c around. Join and break off.

Cap Sleeves 1st row: With right side of dress toward you, attach thread to the last d c preceding chain of underarm, * skip 1 d c of sleeve, make d c, ch 3 and d c in next ch. Repeat from * across sleeve. Join last d c to 2nd ch of ch-13. Sl st in each of next 2 ch, turn. 2nd row: * D c, ch 3 and d c in center of next ch-3. Repeat from * across. Join to 2nd ch of ch-13. Sl st in each of next 2 ch, turn. 3rd row: D c in next d c, * 3 d c in next ch-3, skip 1 d c, d c in next d c. Repeat from * across, join. Sl st in each of next 2 sts, turn. 4th row: D c in each d c across. Join and break off. Work a row of s c closely together all around center back opening, making six ch-5 buttonloops at equal distances apart on right side. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonloops. With velvet ribbon, make 3 bows, 2½ inches long, at center front.

BONNET No. 5020-B

Headsize 20 inches

Headband … Starting at short end, ch 22 to measure about 2 inches. 1st row: D c in 8th ch from hook, d c in each ch across (15 d c). Ch 3 (to count as d c), turn. 2nd row: D c in each of 14 d c, ch 2, skip 2 ch, d c in next ch. Ch 5, turn. 3rd row: D c in each of 14 d c, d c in 3rd st of turning ch. Ch 3, turn. Repeat the 2nd and 3rd rows alternately for 20 inches (68 rows). Fasten off. Sew the 2 short ends together (this is center back).

Top Band 1st row: Attach thread at top to 3rd d c-row from center back (solid edge is top edge), ch 3, d c in bar of d c, 2 d c under each of next 5 dc-bars. Ch 3 (to count as d c), turn. 2nd row: D c in each of 10 d c, d c in top st of ch-3. Ch 3, turn. Repeat this row 7 more times. 10th row: Dec. 1 d c—by working off 2 d c as 1 d c—d c in each d c across. Ch 3, turn. Repeat the 10th row 5 more times. Now inc. 1 d c at beginning of each row—by working 2 d c in 1 d c—until there are 12 d c in row. Work 11 rows without increasing. Fasten off. Sew this end to center front of headband. Make another similar band at center of sides, but work 9 rows before decreasing and 9 rows after increasing (30 rows in all). Sew the centers of these 2 bands together.

Brim 1st row: Counting from center back seam, skip 7 sps, attach thread to next d c, s c in d c, half d c in next st, d c in next st, d c in each st around to within 8 sps from center back, half d c in next st, s c in next st. Fasten off. 2nd row: Attach thread to 6th st from beginning of last row, * ch 3, skip 2 d c, 3 tr-cluster in next d c. Repeat from * around to within last 9 sts (48 clusters), ch 3, skip 2 d c, sl st in next d c. Fasten off. 3rd row: Attach thread to tip of 3rd cluster of last row, s c in cluster, half d c in next st, d c in each st around to within last 4 clusters, d c in next cluster, half d c in next st, s c in next st. Fasten off. 4th row: Same as 2nd row, but make 2 ch's between clusters. 5th, 6th and 7th rows: Repeat 3rd, 2nd and 3rd rows. Fasten off. 8th rnd: Cut a piece of wire 3 inches longer than outer circumference of brim; overlap the ends and fasten securely. Attach thread at center back and, working over the wire in order to conceal it, make s c in each st around. Fasten off. Run ribbon through row of spaces on headband, and tie ends at center front. Cut two 15-inch lengths of ribbon and sew across brim, 4 inches from center back on each side.
