COAT No. 5033-A

Size 4-6

Coat is worked in one piece up to underarm; then work is divided into three sections: Right Front, Left Front, and Back, and continued to the shoulder.

Starting at bottom, make a chain 2 yds. long (11 ch sts to 1 inch). 1st row: Insert hook in 5th ch from hook and pull loop through, * insert hook in next ch and pull loop through, thread over and draw through 2 loops, thread over and draw through remaining 2 loops (1 group made). Ch 1, insert hook in next ch and pull loop through. Repeat from * across until 297 groups are made (row should measure about 54 inches). Cut off remaining chain. Ch 4, turn. 2nd row: Insert hook in space before single vertical thread of previous row and pull loop through, * insert hook in sp after single vertical thread and pull loop through, thread over and draw through 2 loops on hook, thread over and draw through remaining 2 loops. Ch 1, insert hook in space before next single vertical thread and pull loop through. Repeat from * across, ending row with: Insert hook between single vertical thread and turning ch, thread over and pull loop through; thread over and take off 2 loops at a time twice. Ch 4, turn. Repeat the 2nd row for 3 inches. On next row, work in pattern across 1st 39 groups, mark this place with a colored thread; work in pattern across next 40 groups, mark with a colored thread; work across next 44 groups, mark with colored thread; work across next 51 groups, mark with colored thread; work across next 44 groups, mark with colored thread; work across next 40 groups, mark with colored thread; work across next 39 groups. Ch 4, turn. The places marked with colored threads indicate where decreases are to be made. * On next row, dec. 1 group at each colored thread—to decrease, insert hook in space after single vertical thread and pull loop through, insert hook in space after next single vertical thread and pull loop through, complete as for a group. Work 3 rows without decreasing. Repeat from * until 261 groups remain, having all decreases fall in a straight line. ** Make another decrease-row as before. Work 2 rows without decreasing. Repeat from ** 10 more times (195 groups). On next row, work in pattern across 1st 5 groups, ch 6, skip 3 groups, and continue across. On following row, work 3 groups over the ch-6 (thus a buttonhole is made). Now work in pattern, decreasing on every 6th rnd 3 times in all, and making buttonholes, 5 groups in from edge, 2 inches apart. Work without decreasing until piece measures 17¼ inches, ending at buttonhole edge. Do not break off, but work as follows:

Right Front … Work in pattern across 1st 44 groups (this is armhole edge). Ch 4, turn and work over these 44 groups only, decreasing the 2nd group from armhole edge on each row until 38 groups remain, continuing with buttonholes at front edge. Work without decreasing until the 6th buttonhole is completed; then work another ½ inch. On next row, starting at armhole edge, work in pattern across to within last 10 groups. Ch 4, turn (thus starting neck shaping). Hereafter work in pattern, decreasing the 2nd group from neck edge on each row; at the same time, when armhole measures 5½ inches from where work was divided, shape shoulder as follows: Starting at armhole edge, sl st across 1st 4 groups, ch 1, s c in next group and continue in pattern across. On next row work in pattern to within last 5 groups, then make s c in next group, sl st in next s c. Turn and work in this manner, decreasing 4 groups at armhole edge 4 times, and 6 groups once. Fasten off.

Back … Skip 10 groups, counting from armhole edge; attach thread to next group and make a group, work in pattern across next 68 groups. Ch 4, turn. Work over these 69 groups only, decreasing the 2nd and next to the last groups on each row until 63 groups remain. Work without decreasing until armhole measures 5½ inches from place where thread was attached. To shape shoulders, sl st across 1st 4 groups at beginning of row, ch 1, s c in next group and work in pattern across to within last 5 groups, s c in next group, sl st in next s c, turn and work thus, decreasing 4 groups at both ends of each row until 21 groups remain. Fasten off.

Left Front … Skip 10 groups, attach thread to next group and work to correspond with Right Front, omitting buttonholes.

Sleeves … Starting at bottom, ch 101 to measure about 10 inches. Work in pattern (48 groups) for 2 inches. Then inc. 1 group at both ends of next row, increasing in 2nd group and next to the last group, as follows: Complete the 1st group, insert hook in same place where last loop was pulled through and pull loop through; insert hook in space before next single vertical thread and pull loop through, complete as for a group; insert hook where last loop was pulled through and pull loop through; insert hook in space after single vertical thread and pull loop through; complete as for a group. Continue in pattern across, increasing 1 group in same manner at end of row. * Work 6 rows without increasing. Inc. 1 group at both ends of next row, as before. Repeat from * until there are 54 groups in the row. ** Now work 8 rows without increasing. Inc. 1 group at both ends of next row. Repeat from ** until there are 60 groups in the row. Work without increasing until piece measures 10 inches in all. To shape top of sleeve, dec. the 2nd group of each row until 28 groups remain. Then dec. 1 group at both ends of each row until 20 groups remain. Fasten off.

Collar … Starting at outer edge, ch 150 to measure about 14½ inches. Work in pattern (73 groups), decreasing the 2nd group and next to the last group on every other row until 12 groups in all are decreased. On next row, sl st across 1st 4 groups, ch 1, s c in next group and continue in pattern to within last 5 groups, s c in next group, sl st in next s c, turn. Continue in this manner, decreasing 4 groups at both ends of each row until 13 groups remain. Fasten off.

Sew up shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in, folding the extra fullness at top of sleeves into 4 pleats, each 1¼ inches apart. Sew collar to neck edge. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.

HAT No. 5033-B

Headsize 21 inches

Top of Crown … Starting at center, ch 15 to measure about 1¾ inches. 1st rnd: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch across, 3 s c in last ch. Then work along opposite side of foundation chain, making s c in each ch across, 3 s c in turning ch. 2nd rnd: * S c in each s c to within center s c of 3-s c group, 3 s c in center s c. Repeat from * once more. Now repeat 2nd rnd, increasing where necessary to keep work flat, until piece measures 5¾ x 4¼ inches at center. Break off.

Side of Crown … Starting at upper edge (where side joins top), ch 174 to measure about 16 inches. 1st row: Insert hook in 5th ch from hook and pull loop through, insert hook in next ch and pull loop through, thread over and draw through 2 loops on hook, thread over and draw through remaining 2 loops (1 group); * ch 1, insert hook in next ch and pull loop through, insert hook in next ch and pull loop through, thread over and draw through 2 loops, thread over and draw through remaining 2 loops (another group). Repeat from * across (85 groups). Ch 4, turn (ch-1 of last group is included in turning ch). 2nd row: Insert hook in space before single vertical thread of previous row and pull loop through; insert hook in space after single vertical thread and pull loop through, thread over and draw through 2 loops, thread over and draw through remaining 2 loops, ch 1 (1st group). Now make an increase as follows: Insert hook in same space where last loop was pulled through and pull loop through, insert hook in space before next vertical thread and pull loop through, finish group as before (2nd group). Insert hook in same space where last loop was pulled through and pull loop through; insert hook in space after next vertical thread and pull loop through; finish group as before (3rd group). Work across row (as for 1st group) to within last vertical thread of previous row, then inc. as for 2nd and 3rd groups (87 groups in row). Ch 4, turn. Repeat 2nd row 4 more times (95 groups). These increased edges make the back seam. Next row: Insert hook in space after single vertical thread of previous row and pull loop through, insert hook in space after next vertical thread and pull loop through, finish group as before (a decrease). Work across row to within last 2 vertical threads of previous row; then work a dec. as before (93 groups). Ch 4, turn. Repeat this row 21 more times (51 groups). Sl st across 1st group, then make 2 decreases; work across to within last 5 groups, dec. 2 groups, turn. Repeat last row 5 more times (15 groups remain). Break off. Decreased edge is lower edge.

Sew up back seam. Attach thread at back, and work a row of s c all along lower edge (21 inches around). Break off. Attach thread to s c-row, 1 inch from back seam, and work 104 groups to corresponding position on other side of seam. Hereafter dec. 1 group at both ends of each row, at the same time shaping brim as follows: 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows: Inc. 4 groups at equal intervals across each row, being sure increases do not fall over those of previous row (110 groups). 5th and 6th rows: Inc. 2 groups across each row (110 groups). 7th row: Inc. 4 groups (112 groups). 8th and 9th rows: Inc. 2 groups (112 groups). 10th, 11th and 12th rows: Dec. 1 group at both ends of each row (106 groups). Break off.

Finishing … Work a rnd of s c closely together all around edge of top of crown, holding wire along edge and working over it so that it is completely covered. Overlap wire before completing rnd and work over both thicknesses to join. Break off. Sew upper edge of side of crown to wired edge of top. Smarting at back seam, work a row of s c over wire all along edge of brim, joining wire as before at center back. Sew ribbon ties to lower inside edge, 4 inches on either side of back seam. Sew ribbon around crown, having bow at center front.
