4 yds. of velvet ribbon, ½ inch wide.
Gauge: 1 openwork stripe and 5 d c make 1¼ inches; 4 rows make 1 inch.
Back … Starting at waistline, ch 123 to measure about 13½ inches. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in each of next 2 ch, * ch 1, skip 2 ch, d c in next ch, ch 2, d c in same ch, ch 1, skip 2 ch, d c in each of next 7 ch. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 1, skip 2 ch, d c in each of 4 d c (10 openwork stripes and 9 d c-stripes; also 4 d c at each end). Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Skip 1st d c, d c in each of 3 d c, * ch 1; in next ch-2 loop make d c, ch 2 and d c; ch 1, d c in each of next 7 d c. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 1, d c in each of 3 d c, d c in turning ch. Ch 3, turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures 5 inches.
To Shape Armholes … Sl st in each of 7 sts, ch 3, d c in each of next 7 d c and continue in pattern to within last openwork stripe, ending with 7 d c, d c in ch-2 sp (between 2 d c). Ch 3, turn. Work without decreasing until piece measures 6 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulder, on next row sl st in each of 7 sts, ch 3, skip openwork stripe and work in pattern across next 2 stripes. Ch 3, turn. Work back until 3 d c are made in 2nd d c-stripe; then make d c in last d c of same stripe, turn, sl st in each of 3 d c, ch 3, d c in each of 7 d c. Fasten off. Skip 4 openwork stripes, attach thread to next d c-stripe, and work to correspond with opposite side.
Front … Work exactly as for Back until piece measures 3½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. On next row, work in pattern across to end of the 3rd d c-stripe, turn and work over this section only for 2½ inches more. Then, starting at armhole edge, shape shoulder as for Back. Fasten off. Skip 4 openwork stripes, attach thread to next d c-stripe, and work to correspond with opposite side.
Sew up underarm and shoulder seams.
Skirt … Attach thread at underarm side of Back, ch 5, * skip 1 st of foundation, tr in next st, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-1 with sl st to 4th st of ch-5 first made (107 sps). Then work as follows: 1st rnd: Ch 3 (to count as d c), d c in each of next 6 sts, * ch 1, skip 1 st; make d c, ch 2 and d c in next ch, ch 1, skip 1 st, d c in each of next 7 sts. Repeat from * around, ending with d c, ch 2 and d c in last ch-2 sp, ch 1. Join to 3rd st of ch-3 first made (21 d c-stripes in the rnd). 2nd rnd: Ch 3, d c in each of next 6 sts, * ch 1; d c, ch 2 and d c in next ch-2 sp; ch 1, d c in each of next 7 d c. Repeat from * around, ending with d c, ch 2 and d c in last ch-2 sp, ch 1. Join. Repeat the 2nd rnd 2 more times. On next rnd, inc. 1 d c in center of every other d c-stripe—by making 2 d c in 1 d c. * On following rnd, inc. 1 d c in center of d c-stripes where increases were not made previously. Work 2 rnds without increasing. Repeat from * until there are 22 d c in each d c-stripe. Then work as follows: 1st rnd: Ch 3, * d c in each d c of d c-group, d c in ch-1, d c in next d c, 2 d c in ch-2 sp, d c in next d c, d c in ch-1. Repeat from * around. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, d c in each d c around. Fasten off.
Sleeves … Starting at bottom, ch 75 to measure about 8½ inches. 1st row: Same as 1st row of Back. 2nd row: 2 d c in 1st d c, and continue in pattern, increasing 1 d c in each d c-stripe, but do not inc. in the 4 d c at end of row. Ch 3, turn. Repeat the last row until 10 rows are completed. To shape top of sleeve, sl st in each of 8 sts, ch 3 and continue in pattern across, without increasing, to within 8 sts from end of row, d c in 1st d c of d c-group, turn. 4th row: S c in ch-2 sp, ch 2 and continue in pattern to within last openwork stripe, d c in ch-2 sp, turn. Hereafter dec. 1 d c in center of each d c-stripe every other row until 9 d c remain in each stripe. Now dec. 2 d c in 1st and last stripes on next 4 rows, continuing with usual decreases on other stripes (7 d c in each stripe). Fasten off. Sew up sleeve seams; sew sleeves in.
Frill … Attach thread to foundation chain of sleeve, ch 5, * skip 1 st, tr in next st, ch 1. Repeat from * around, join. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, d c in each of next 2 sts, * 2 d c in next st, d c in each of next 3 sts, ch 1, skip 1 ch; in next ch make d c, ch 2 and d c; ch 1, skip 1 ch, d c in each of next 3 sts. Repeat from * around (7 d c-groups). 3rd and 4th rnds: Ch 3, * d c in each d c, ch 1; in ch-2 sp make d c, ch 2 and d c; ch 1. Repeat from * around, join. Fasten off. Work frill of other sleeve to correspond.
Attach thread to center back of neck edge, ch 6, * skip 1 st, tr in next st, ch 1. Repeat from * around, keeping corners square. Join. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, d c in each of 1st 6 sts, * ch 1, skip 1 st; in next st make d c, ch 2, and d c; ch 1, d c in each of next 7 sts. Repeat from * around. Fasten off.
Run ribbon through the openwork row of frill at neck edge and tie ends in a bow at center front. Finish sleeves in same way, making bows at center. Run remaining ribbon through openwork rnd at waistline and tie in a bow at center front.
