Back … Attach thread to center d c of 5-d c group at right of opening, and work as follows: 1st row: Ch 3 (to count as d c), make d c where thread was attached, ch 1, 2 d c in same place, * ch 1, skip 4 sts, make a shell in next d c. Repeat from * across to corresponding d c of next d c-group, ending with shell in center d c of group. Ch 5, turn. 2nd row: D c in 4th ch from hook, ch 1, 2 d c in same place (a shell increased), * ch 1, shell over shell. Repeat from * across. Ch 5, turn. Repeat 2nd row 5 more times. Fasten off.
Front … Attach thread to center d c of d c-group at right and work as for Back, keeping center Front pattern throughout (ch 1, shell, ch 1, d c, ch 1, shell, ch 1). Do not break off at end of 7th row, but ch 1 and work in rnds along Front and Back as follows: 1st and 2nd rnds: Sl st to sp of next shell, ch 3 and complete shell, * ch 1, shell over shell. Repeat from * around, keeping center Front in pattern and ending rnd with ch 1, sl st in 3rd st of ch-3 first made. Hereafter join each rnd in this manner. 3rd rnd: Sl st to sp of next shell, ch 3 and work in pattern across 1st 2 shells, ch 1, d c in next ch-1 sp between shells (an increase), ch 1, work over next 4 shells, ch 1, d c in next ch-1 sp (another increase), ch 1 and continue thus around, making an increase after every 4th shell, but on center of Front work d c over d c in pattern, without making additional increase (4 shells, 1 d c, 4 shells between increases on Front). Collar (Right Half) … Attach main color to 3rd st of ch-3 on 4th d c-row. 1st row: Ch 3, d c in each d c to within 1st ch-1 of center Front, making 3 d c in center d c of each d c-group. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Complete shell in 1st d c, * ch 1, skip 3 d c, shell in next d c. Repeat from * across (17 shells). 3rd and 4th rows: Work shell over shell across, with ch-1 between. 5th row: Shell over each of 1st 5 shells, with ch-1 between; ch 1, d c in next ch-1 sp (an increase), ch 1, shell over shell, another increase, ch 1, shell over each of next 6 shells, another increase, ch 1, shell over next shell, another increase, ch 1, shell over each of remaining 4 shells. Ch 3, turn. 6th row: Shell over shell across, with ch-1 between, making a small shell over each increased d c. Ch 3, turn. 7th row: Shell over shell across. Fasten off. Attach contrasting color to sp of 1st shell, ch 3, 5 d c in same sp, * 6 d c in next shell. Repeat from * across. Fasten off.
Collar (Left Half) … Attach thread to d c following last ch-1 of center Front on 4th d c-row and work to correspond with right half. Fasten off.
Attach contrasting color to d c following last ch-1 on 4th row of center Front and work s c along edges of left half of collar, back opening, neck edge and right half of collar. Fasten off. Attach contrasting color to 1st ch-1 on 10th row of center Front (right side) and, working toward bottom of dress, * ch 1, s c in next ch-1 on next row. Repeat from * to bottom. Fasten off.
Attach contrasting color to last ch-1 on 10th row of center Front (left side), and trim in same manner. With main color, work a row of s c around both armholes. Sew buttons on left side of back opening. Use corresponding spaces between first 2 d c's on right side for buttonholes.
