J. & P. COATS or CLARK'S O.N.T. SIX STRAND EMBROIDERY FLOSS, 1 skein each of 4 contrasting colors.
A piece of buckram 7 x 11 inches.

GAUGE: 13 sts make 2 inches; 5 rows make 1 inch.

Use double thread throughout.

HAT … Starting at front edge with No. 2 hook, ch 106 to measure 16 inches. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (105 sc). Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in back loop of 1st sc, * sc in front loop of next sc, sc in back loop of next sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn.
Repeat 2nd row until piece measures 6½ inches. Fasten off. Turn. For back piece, work as follows: Attach thread in 39th sc from end, ch 1, sc in back loop of same sc where thread was attached, work in pattern across next 28 sc (29 sc in all). Do not work across remaining 38 sc. Ch 1, turn. Work in pattern across these 29 sc for 6 inches. Fasten off.
Sew side edges of back piece to the 38 sc remaining on each side of back piece. Attach thread to lower edge 2½ inches in from front edge and work sc across lower edge to corresponding position on other side, holding it in to fit.

TRIM … With No. 6 hook and 1 color of Six Strand, ch 2. 1st rnd: 7 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Do not join rnds. 2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around (14 sc). 3rd rnd: * Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc. Repeat from * around (21 sc). Sl st in next sc. Fasten off, leaving an end for sewing.
Make 4 circles of each color. Turn front edge of Hat back for 1 inch at center front, allowing both points to turn back for about 2 inches. Sew circles to right side of turn-back on each side point as in illustration.

BAG … Ch 48 to measure 7 inches. Work in pattern as for Hat (47 sc) until piece measures 12 inches. Dec 1 sc at both ends of each row until 33 sc remain—to decrease, work off 2 sc as 1 sc. Fasten off. Work a row of sc along shaped end to even it off.

GUSSET SHOULDER STRAP … Ch 8 and work in pattern as for Hat (7 sc) until piece measures 32 inches. Fasten off.

FINISHING … Measure 5 inches down from straight end of Bag piece and mark with a pin; measure 1 inch away from pin and mark. This 1-inch area is bottom of Bag. Sew ends of Gusset Shoulder Strap to edges of 1-inch edge; then sew sides together for 5 inches. Remainder of Bag piece is flap. Cut a piece of lining material 8 x 14 inches. Place buckram on top of lining and turn over ½ inch on two long ends and one short end. Press down, then machine stitch around ⅛ inch in from edge. Machine stitch across buckram 5 inches in from each 7-inch end. Fold at this stitching, having lining on the inside. Sew Gussets of lining material in place between 5-inch edges. Slip this lining foundation into crocheted Bag and whip top edges together. Turn under raw edges of remaining lining material and face crocheted flap.
Make 1 circle of each color same as Trim on Hat and sew to center of flap. Fasten with snap fastener.
