MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS KNIT-CRO-SHEEN, 3 balls for Hats without brim.
For Hat with brim 2 more balls are required.
For Spangled Hat use 3 balls (1 oz. balls) of CHADWICK'S RED HEART KNITTING WORSTED.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 1 for cotton hats.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 2/0 (double zero) for wool hat.
GAUGE: (For Knit-Cro-Sheen) 2 shells and 1 sc make 1½ inches. (For Worsted) 1 shell and 1 sc make 1 inch.
Starting at top with triple thread of Knit-Cro-Sheen or 1 strand of Worsted, ch 4. 1st rnd: 11 dc in 4th ch from hook. Join with sl st to 1st ch. 2nd rnd: Ch 3 (to count as dc), dc in same place as sl st, 2 dc in each dc around (24 dc). Join. 3rd rnd: Ch 3, * 2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc. Repeat from * around (36 dc). Join. 4th rnd: Ch 3, dc in next dc, * 2 dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc. Repeat from * around (48 dc). Join. Now work shell pattern as follows: 1st rnd: Ch 1, sc in same place as sl st, * skip 1 dc, in next dc make 3 dc (shell), skip 1 dc, sc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join last shell with sl st in 1st sc made. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, 2 dc in same place as sl st, * sc in center dc of next shell, shell in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join last sc with sl st in top of 1st ch-3. 3rd rnd: Sl st in next dc, ch 1, sc in same place, * shell in next sc, sc in next shell. Repeat from * around. Join.
For Worsted Hat, 4th to 6th rnds incl: Repeat 2nd, 3rd and 2nd rnds.
For Knit-Cro-Sheen Hats, 4th to 8th rnds incl: Repeat 2nd and 3rd rnds alternately 2 more times; then repeat the 2nd rnd once more.
For all Hats, begin at 9th rnd. 9th rnd: Sl st in next dc, ch 1, sc in same place, * (shell in next sc, sc in next shell) 3 times; shell in next sc. Work an increase as follows: Sc in next dc, shell in next dc, sc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join. 10th to 14th rnds incl: Repeat 2nd and 3rd rnds alternately twice; then repeat the 2nd rnd once more. 15th rnd: Repeat the 9th rnd. 16th, 17th and 18th rnds: Repeat 2nd, 3rd and 2nd rnds. 19th rnd: Repeat the 9th rnd. 20th, 21st and 22nd rnds: Repeat 2nd, 3rd and 2nd rnds. Fasten off if working with Worsted. If working with Knit-Cro-Sheen, continue with following directions. 23rd rnd: Sl st in next dc, ch 1, sc in same place, * (shell in next sc, sc in next shell) 4 times; shell in next sc, increase as before. Repeat from * around. Join. 24th to 28th rnds incl: Repeat 2nd and 3rd rnds alternately 2 more times; then repeat 2nd rnd once more. Join and fasten off for Hats without Brim.
Drape Hats as in illustrations, or to suit individual taste.
BRIM … 1st to 7th rnds incl: Work around in pattern, increasing 4 shells on each rnd, being careful increases do not fall over each other. 8th rnd: Work without increasing. Fasten off.
TASSEL CAP … With triple thread of Knit-Cro-Sheen, ch 2 loosely. 1st rnd: 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Do not join rnds. 2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around (16 sc). 3rd, 4th and 5th rnds: Sc in each sc around. 6th rnd: Sl st in each sc around. Join and fasten off.
TASSEL STRANDS … With triple thread, ch 1. * Pull loop on hook out to measure 1 inch, (thread over, insert hook in ch-1 and pull loop out to measure 1 inch) 3 times; thread over and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 to fasten (puff st made). Repeat from * until there are 16 puff sts made. Fasten off, leaving a 10-inch length of thread. Make 7 more strands same as this. Pull all the 10-inch ends through center of Tassel Cap. Divide ends into 3 parts and braid.
