5 yards of grey linen and 1 yard of pink linen, 36 inches wide.
GAUGE: Each motif measures 2½ inches square.
Tablecloth measures 74 x 90 inches; each Napkin measures 17 inches square.
CENTER—First Motif … Starting at center, ch 12. Join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 4, 8 tr in ring, (ch 5, 9 tr in ring) 3 times; ch 5, sl st to 4th ch of ch-4. 2nd rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, * (ch 3, skip next tr, sc in next tr) 4 times; ch 5, sc in next sp, ch 5, sc in next tr. Repeat from * around, ending with sl st in first sc made. 3rd rnd: Sl st in next loop, ch 3, 4 dc in same loop, drop loop from hook, insert hook in top of ch-3 and draw dropped loop through (a starting pc st made), (ch 2, 5 dc in next loop, drop loop from hook, insert hook in top of first dc and draw dropped loop through—pc st made) 3 times; * ch 5, sc in next loop, sc in next sc, sc in next loop, ch 5, (pc st in next loop, ch 2) 3 times; pc st in next loop. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 5, sl st in top of first pc st. 4th rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 3, make a starting pc st in same sp, (ch 2, pc st in next sp) twice; * ch 5, sc in next loop, sc in next 3 sc, sc in next loop, ch 5, (pc st in next sp, ch 2) twice; pc st in next sp. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 5. Join. 5th rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 3, make a starting pc st in same sp, ch 2, pc st in next sp, * (ch 7, sc in next loop) twice; ch 7, pc st in next sp, ch 2, pc st in next sp. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 7. Join. 6th rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 3, make a starting pc st in same sp, * ch 7, sc in next sp, ch 9, holding back on hook the last loop of each tr, make 3 tr in next loop, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (cluster made), ch 13, cluster in same loop, ch 9, sc in next loop, ch 7, pc st in next sp. Repeat from * around. Join and break off.
SECOND MOTIF … Work as for First Motif until 5 rnds have been completed. 6th rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 3, make a starting pc st in same sp, ch 7, sc in next sp, ch 9, cluster in next sp, ch 6, sl st in corresponding loop on First Motif, ch 6, cluster in same sp as last cluster was made on Second Motif, ch 4, sl st in corresponding loop on First Motif, ch 4, sc in next sp on Second Motif, ch 3, sl st in corresponding loop on First Motif, ch 3, pc st in next sp on Second Motif. Complete rnd, joining next 3 loops to corresponding loops on First Motif as before. Break off.
Make 6 rows of 13 motifs, joining adjacent sides as Second Motif was joined to First Motif (where 4 corners meet, join 3rd and 4th corners to joining of previous 2 corners).
EDGING … Attach thread to any pc st on long side, sc in same place, * ch 8, skip next sp, sc in next loop, ch 8, sc in next joining, ch 8, sc in next loop, ch 8, sc in next pc st. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in corner loop, ch 8, sc in next loop, and work around remaining sides and corners the same way. Join and break off.
Cut 2 strips of grey linen, 14 x 60 inches and 2 strips, 14 x 44 inches. Sew short strips between long strips, mitering corners. Roll a narrow hem around both edges. Sew Center in place.
INSERTION … Make 3 rows of 30 motifs, joining as before.
To Form Corner: Make 3 more motifs, joining to first 3 motifs on last row.
Continue joining rows of 3 motifs until 19 rows of motifs have been made. (There are 22 rows of 3 motifs in all across short side.) Complete other sides and corners the same way. Join last row of motifs to first side to form last corner. Work Edging around both edges as for Center. Sew Insertion to Center.
Cut 2 strips of linen, 8 x 90 inches and 2 strips, 8 x 74 inches. Sew together as before, mitering corners. Roll a narrow hem around both edges. Sew linen to Insertion.
NAPKIN (Make 4) … Cut a piece of pink linen 16½ inches square. Make a motif as for Tablecloth. Work Edging around motif. Pin in place on corner of Napkin. Cut out material in back of motif, leaving ⅛ inch for hem. Sew hem and motif neatly in place. Roll a narrow hem around Napkin.
EDGING … 1st rnd: Attach thread to corner opposite motif, 5 sc in same corner, sc closely around, making 5 sc in each corner and making 8 sc in each sp on motif, sc in each sc and 3 sc in corner sc. Join. 2nd rnd: Sl st to center sc of corner, ch 6, dc in same sc, * ch 3, skip 3 sc, dc in next sc. Repeat from * across, ending with dc in center sc of next corner, having a number of sps divisible by 4 and 2 extra (including corner sp), ch 3, dc in same sc and work around remaining sides and corners the same way. Join to 3rd ch of ch-6. 3rd rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 4, in same sp make 2-tr cluster, ch 5 and 3-tr cluster; ** ch 5, sc in next sp, * ch 5, skip next sp, in next sp make 3-tr cluster, ch 5 and 3-tr cluster; ch 5, skip next sp, sc in next sp. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in sp preceding corner sp, ch 5, in corner sp make cluster, ch 5 and cluster. Repeat from ** around. Join and break off.
Starch lightly and press.
