Spool Cotton #115, Modern Chair Sets

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. (3 balls) or J. & P. Coats (2 balls) Mercerized Crochet, size 60, White or Ecru.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 13.

When completed, chair back measures about 15½ x 7½ inches, and each arm piece 9 x 7½ inches, measuring from outermost points.

Gauge: 8 sps or bls make 1 inch; 8 rows make 1 inch.

Chair Back. 1st row: Starting at lower point, ch 8, d c in 8th ch from hook. Ch 8, turn. 2nd row: D c in d c (1 sp increased), 2 d c in sp, d c in 6th st of ch-8 of previous row (1 bl made), ch 5, d c in same place as last d c (another sp increased), turn. 3rd row: Sl st to 3rd st of ch-5 sp, ch 8, d c in same place as last sl st was made, 3 bls, making last d c in 6th st of last ch-8 sp, ch 5, d c in same place as last d c was made, turn. Sl st to 3rd st of ch-5 and continue following chart, increasing 1 sp at both ends of each row as before and making bls between 2 outer sps of each row until 5 rows are completed (7 bls between 2 outer sps on 5th row). Sl st to 3rd st of last sp. 6th row: Ch 82, turn. Without breaking off main thread, attach strand of same thread to 3rd st of last sp at opposite end of 5th row and ch 79. Break off. Resuming work at other end, d c in 8th ch from hook, * ch 2, skip 2 ch, d c in next ch. Repeat from * along foundation ch just made (26 sps), 1 bl, 7 sps, 1 bl; on foundation ch at opposite end, make 26 sps to correspond. Hereafter follow chart, increasing 1 sp at both ends of each row as before until 26 rows are made. 27th row: Sl st to next d c (1 dec. made), follow chart across row to within last sp, turn (another dec. made). Hereafter follow chart, decreasing 1 sp at both ends of each row until 20 dec. rows are made. Then, on next row, sl st across next 26 sps and work point to correspond with opposite point. Break off. Make a row of s c all around edges, keeping work flat.

Arm Pieces. Starting at lower point, ch 8 and follow chart, making increases and decreases as for chair back, but adding 36 ch (instead of 81) on 11th row and 33 ch, with another strand, at other end of row. Work across chain as for chair back (11 sps added on each end). Make a row of s c all around edges. Break off.
