Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Mercer­ized Crochet Size 20 white.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 8.
White linen 54-inch square.

The corner pieces are made separately and then whipped in place. Make the four corner pieces as follows:

To begin, ch 95, turn. 1st row: 1 d c in 6th ch from hook, ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 d c in next, ch 1, skip 1, 1 d c in next, * ch 5, skip 5 sts, 1 d c in next, ch 1, skip 1, 1 d c in next, ch 1, skip 1, 1 d c in next, ch 1, skip 1, 1 d c in next and repeat from * ending row with d c group (8 groups in all). Ch 5, turn. 2nd and 3rd rows: Same as 1st row. At 3rd row, ch 7 to turn. 4th row: * skip ch-1, 1 d tr in next d c, ch 1, skip ch-1, 1 d tr in next d c, ch 1, skip ch-1, 1 d tr in next d c, ch 5, skip ch-5, 1 d tr in next d c, ch 1, and repeat from * to end of row. Ch 7, turn. 5th to 34th rows incl: Repeat from 1st row until 34 rows are com­pleted or until block is square. Break off. Make three more corners same way.

Make four side pieces to be joined to the corners, as follows:

Begin with ch 95, turn. 1st row: 1 d tr in 6th ch from hook, 1 d tr in each of next 30 sts of foundation ch; * ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 d tr in next, and repeat from * until 15 ch-1 sps are made; 1 d tr in each of next 18 sts, ch 4, skip 4, 1 d tr in each of next 2 sts, ch 4, skip 4, 1 d tr in each of next 2 sts. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 1 s c in each d tr of preceding row, ch 4 over each ch-4, ch 1 over each ch-1. Ch 6, turn. 3rd row: Skip 1st s c, 1 d tr in next, * ch 4, skip 4, 1 d tr in each of next 2 s c, repeat from * until 5 sps in all are made, with 1 d tr after last sp. ** Ch 1, skip 1 s c, 1 d tr in next, and repeat from ** 14 times (or until 16 d tr with 15 ch-1 sps are made). 1 d tr in each of next 18 s c, then ch 4, skip ch-4, 1 d tr in each of next 2 sts, ch 4, skip ch-4, 1 d tr in each of next 2 sts. Ch 1, turn. 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th, 12th, 14th, 16th, 18th, 20th, 22nd, 24th, 26th rows: Same as 2nd row. 5th, 7th and 9th rows: Same as 3rd row. 11th row: Work same as 3rd row until last d tr of 16-d tr group is made, then * ch 4, skip 4 s c, 1 d tr in each of next 2 s c, and repeat from * to end of row. Ch 6, turn. 13th and 15th rows: Same as 11th row. 17th row: Skip 1st s c, 1 d tr in each st to end of row. Ch 6, turn. 19th row: Skip 1st s c, 1 d tr in each s c to with­in 54 sts from end, then * ch 4, skip 4 sts, 1 d tr in each of next 2 sts, and repeat from * to end of row (9 large sps), ch 6, turn. 21st, 23rd and 25th rows: Same as 19th row. 27th row: Skip 1 st, 1 d c in next, ch 1, skip 1, 1 d c in next, ch 1, skip 1, 1 d c in next, * ch 5, skip 5, 1 d c in next, ch 1, skip 1, 1 d c in next, ch 1, skip 1, 1 d c in next, ch 1, skip 1, 1 d c in next, and repeat from * ending row with d c group (8 groups in all). Ch 5, turn. 28th and 29th rows: Same as 27th row. Ch 6 to turn at 29th row. 30th row: * Skip ch-1, 1 d tr in next d c, ch 1, skip ch-1, 1 d tr in next d c, ch 1, skip ch-1, 1 d tr in next d c, ch 6, skip ch-5, 1 d tr in next d c, ch 1, and repeat from * to end of row. Ch 6, turn. 31st to 37th rows incl: Repeat from beginning of 27th row until 37 rows are completed. 38th row: Same as 2nd row. Ch 6, turn. 39th row: 1 d tr in each of next 31 sts, * ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 d tr in next, and repeat from * until 15 ch-1 sps are made, 1 d tr in each of next 18 sts, ch 4, skip 4, 1 d tr in each of next 2 sts, ch 4, skip 4, 1 d tr in each of next 2 sts. 40th and subsequent rows: Repeat from beginning of 2nd row through 26th rows incl. Break off. Make three more in same way. Whip the side pieces in place to the corners. Place this finished crocheted piece on the linen, baste in place, and whip down edges, cutting the linen away underneath.
