Missal Bookmark Pattern #9049

MATERIALS:
Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, size 80, 1 ball of White.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 14.

Starting at one end, ch 4. 1st row: 4 d c in 4th ch from hook. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: D c in 1st d c (increase), d c in each d c across, 2 d c in 3rd st of turning ch (another increase). Ch 3, turn. Repeat 2nd row until there are 25 d c in the row. Ch 3, turn. 12th row: D c in each d c across. Ch 3, turn. Repeat 12th row until piece measures 3 inches from point. Ch 5, turn. Next row: * Skip 2 d c, d c in next d c, ch 2. Repeat from * across (8 sps). Ch 5, turn. Following row: D c in next d c, d c in each of next 2 ch, d c in next d c, d c in each of next 2 ch, d c in next d c (2 bls); ch 2, d c in next d c (1 sp); make another sp, 2 bls, 1 sp. Ch 3, turn. Hereafter follow chart, starting at 3rd row, and work until Cross is completed. Then continue making rows of d c as in beginning until piece measures 8 inches. Fasten off. Make 2 more pieces same as this, but do not break off after last piece is made. Place all three pieces together and work a row of d c through the 3 thicknesses, thus joining pieces. Then dec. 1 d c at both ends of each row until 5 d c remain—to dec., work off 2 d c as 1 d c. Fasten off.

TASSELS (Make 4) … Cut a cardboard 2 inches long and 4 inches wide. Cut 2 strands of thread, each 6 inches long, and place them across width of cardboard. Then wind 2 strands of thread around length of cardboard 125 times. Break off. Pick up both ends of the 6-inch strands, and tie securely, making 7 knots. Remove cardboard and cut loops at one end. Trim ends evenly. Then wind a thread around these strands at opposite end, ¼ inch down from top, and tie securely. Sew a tassel at each point of bookmark.
