This free pattern originally published by John Dritz & Sons Company, Volume 10, in 1947.

Purse No. 779

Materials Required:

DRITZ Belastraw Art. No. 110, 3 tubes.

DRITZ Metallic Yarn Art. No. 114, 1 tube.

DRITZ Steel Crochet Hook No. 1.

DRITZ Bag Lining No. 786 (Zipper Top).

DRITZ Ornamental Zipper Pull.

17" of Millinery Wire.

GAUGE: 5 sts make 1".

Starting st center of bottom, ch 18 to measure 3 1/2".

1st rnd: Make 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in 15 ch, 3 sc in last ch; then working along opposite side of starting chain make sc in 15 ch. Mark last st of each rnd.

2nd rnd: Sc in next sc, 3 sc in next sc (point), sc in 17 sc, 3 sc in next sc (point), sc in remaining 16 sc.

3rd rnd: * Sc in each sc to center sc of the 3-sc group of next point, 3 sc in center sc. Repeat from * once more; sc in each remaining sc of rnd. Repeat 3rd rnd until piece measures about 3 1/2" by 6 1/2". Clamp wire to form ring; then shape into an oval.

Next rnd: Starting at point and working over wire, * insert hook in next sc and pull loop through, y o, through 1 loop, insert hook in same sc and pull loop through, y o, through 3 loops. Repeat from * around.

Work up Side as follows:

1st rnd: Dc in back loop of each st increasing evenly to 96 sts.

2nd and 3rd rnds: Dc in each dc.

4th rnd: * Sc in back loop of each next 2 sts, sc in front loop of each of next 2 sts. Repeat from *.

5th rnd: * Sc in front loop of each of next 2 sts, sc in back loop of each of next 2 sts. Repeat from *. Repeat 4th and 5th rnds until side meaures 5 1/2" from wired edge. Work 4 rnds of dc. Join and drop Belastraw (top of bag).

MESH: Attach Metallic Yarn in base of 1st dc 4 rnds back, ch 1, sc where yarn was attached, * ch 5, skip 2 dc, sc in same place as next dc.

Repeat from * ending with ch 2, dc in 1st sc (32 loops).

Next rnd: * Ch 5, insert hook through next loop and in base of next corresponding dc on following rnd and pull loop through, complete an sc.

Repeat from * ending with ch 2, dc in top of dc. Repeat last rnd 2 more times (4 rows of loops). End off.

Following rnd: Pick up Belastraw and work sc around catching center of each Metallic loop. End off.

With top of bag toward you, attach Metallic Yarn in base of dc 3 rnds from wired edge and work 3 rows of loops same as before. End off.

Attach Belastraw and work sc's in remaining loops of wired edge catching center of each Metallic loop. End off.

Mount on DRITZ Bag Lining No. 786. Attach DRITZ Ornamental Zipper Pull with 4" chain.

HANDLE: With Belastraw ch 98.

1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch. Ch 1, turn.

2nd to 6th rows: Sc in each sc. Ch 1, turn. Drop Belastraw at end of 6th row.

MESH: 1st row: Attach Metallic Yarn in base of 1st sc made, ch 1, sc in same place, * ch 5, skip 2 sc, sc in base of next sc. Repeat from *. End off.

2nd row: Insert hook through 1st loop of last row * and in base of next corresponding sc on 3rd row and pull loop through, complete an sc, ch 5, insert hook in next loop. Repeat from *. End off.

3rd row: Sc in base of 1st sc on 5th row, * ch 5, and work loops across catching previous loops as before. End off.

4th row: Pick up Belastraw, ch 1, turn and work sc's across catching center of each loop, sc across end of piece, sc along other 2 edges. End off. Sew ends of Handle in place.
