This free pattern originally published by John Dritz & Sons Company, Volume 10, in 1947.

Hat No. 788

Materials Required:

DRITZ Belastraw Art. No. 110, 3 tubes.

DRITZ Metallic Yarn Art. No. 114, 2 tubes.

DRITZ Steel Crochet Hook No. 1.

56 1/2" Millinery Wire.

GAUGE: 5 sc make 1".

CROWN: Work same as Breton Beauty Hat No. 778 until there are 72 sc on rnd. Work next rnd increasing to 84 sc. End off.

Metallic Band: 1st rnd: Attach Metallic Yarn in any sc, ch 3, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook and pull loop through, pull loop through next ch, pull loop through same sc where yarn was attached, pull loop through next sc, y o and draw through all 5 loops on hook, ch 1 (star st made); * pull loop through "eye" of last star st and another through back of last loop of same star st; pull loop through same sc where last loop of last st was pulled through; pull loop through each of next 2 sc, y o and draw through all 6 loops, ch 1. Repeat from * (42 star sts). Join with sl st in "eye" of 1st star st.

2nd rnd: Ch 2 * make 2 hdc in "eye" of each of next 6 star sts, 3 hdc in next "eye". Repeat from * (90 hdc). Join and end off.

Next rnd: With Belastraw work sc in each hdc increasing to 94 sc. Clamp 18 3/4" of wire to form ring.

Following rnd: Working over wire, * insert hook in next sc and pull loop through, y o, through 1 loop, insert hook in same sc and pull loop through, y o, through 3 loops. Repeat from * (94 sts). Work down side as follows:

1st and 2nd rnds: Sc around decreasing 4 sc on each rnd (86 sc).

3rd rnd: Work 1st rnd of Metallic Band (43 star sts).

4th rnd: Work 2nd rnd of Metallic Band (92 hdc).

5th rnd: With Belastraw work sc around decreasing to 88 sts.

6th to 9th rnds incl: Sc around (88 sc).

10th rnd: Work 1st rnd of Metallic Band (44 star sts).

11th rnd: Work 2nd rnd of Metallic Band (94 hdc).

12th rnd: Repeat 5th rnd (88 sc).

13th to 17th rnds: Sc around increasing 7 sc on each rnd (130 sc).

18th rnd: Work 1st rnd of Metallic Band (64 star sts).

19th rnd: Work 2nd rnd of Metallic Band (140 hdc).

20th to 25th rnds: Sc around increasing 6 sc on each rnd (176 sc)

26th rnd: Work 1st rnd of Metallic Band (88 star sts).

27th rnd: Work 2nd rnd of Metallic Band (188 hdc).

Do not end off Metallic Yarn. Clamp remaining 37 1/2" of wire to form ring. With Metallic Yarn work over it same as on Crown. End off. Brush with sizing, shape in hands and allow to dry.
