This free pattern originally published by John Dritz & Sons Company, Volume 10, in 1947.

Purse No. 774

Materials Required:

DRITZ Belastraw Art. No. 110, 5 tubes

DRITZ Steel Crochet Hook No. 1.

DRITZ Bag Lining No. 785 (Zipper Top).

DRITZ Ornamental Zipper Pull.

50" of Millinery Wire

GAUGE: 5 sts make 1".

SIDE: (make 2)--Ch 2.

1st rnd: 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Mark last st of each rnd.

2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc (16 sc).

3rd rnd: * Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc. Repeat from * (24 sc).

4th rnd: * Sc in 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Repeat from * (32 sc).

5th rnd: * Count back 3 sts, insert hook in corresponding st 3 rnds below and pull loop through to height of last sc, y o and draw through the 2 loops on hook (a long st made), skip 1 sc, sc in next 5 sc. Repeat from * (5 long sts).

6th, 7th and 8th rnds: Sc in each st increasing 8 sc evenly on each rnd (56 sc on 8th rnd).

9th rnd: Repeat 5th rnd (9 long sts).

10th, 11th and 12th rnds: Repeat 6th rnd (80 sc on 12th rnd).

13th rnd: * Make a long st, skip 1 sc, sc in next 8 sc. Repeat from * (9 long sts).

14th, 15th, and 16th rnds: Repeat 6th rnd (104 sc on 16th rnd).

17th rnd: * Make a long st, skip 1 sc, sc in next 6 sc. Repeat from * (15 long sts).

18th and 19th rnds: Repeat 6th rnd (120 sc on 19th rnd).

Cut 25" of wire. Clamp to form ring.

20th rnd: Working over wire, * insert hook in next sc and pull loop through, y o, through 1 loop, insert hook in same sc and pull loop through, y o, through 3 loops. Repeat from *. Ch 1, turn.

TOP OF GUSSET: 1st row: Work sc in back loop of each sc over the next 9". Ch 1, turn.

2nd, 3rd and 4th rows: Sc in each sc. Ch 1, turn. End off at end of 4th row.

BOTTOM OF GUSSET: Ch 12.

1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch (11 sc). Ch 1, turn.

2nd row: Sc in each sc (11 sc). Ch 1, turn. Repaet 2nd row until piece measures 16". End off.

Pin long edge of Bottom of Gusset to remainder of wired edges of Sides. Join by working sc through both thicknesses leaving 1 loop of each sc free on each Side.

RUFFLE: 1st rnd: Working in remaining loop of each sc on outer edge of Side make * sc in next sc. 2 sc in next sc. Repeat from * (180 sc).

Join with sl st in 1st sc. Ch 1, turn.

2nd, 3rd and 4th rnds: Sc in each sc. Join, ch 1, turn.

Mount on DRITZ Bag Lining No. 785.

HANDLE: Ch 9. Work same as Bottom of Gusset (8 sc) for 30". End off. Sew ends in place on both ends of zipper opening.

Attach DRITZ Ornamental Zipper Pull with a chain of Belastraw.
