This free pattern originally published by Clark's O.N.T. J&P Coats as Bags, Book 228.

MATERIALS: CHADWICK'S RED HEART KNITTING WORSTED, 4 balls (1 oz. balls) of Navy ... J. & P. COATS OR CLARK'S O.N.T. PEARL COTTON, Size 5, 4 balls of Ecru ... Bone Crochet Hook No. 7 ... ⅓ yard of lining material ... Strip of buckram, 1 ½ x 36 inches ... 15 inch zipper.

Use 1 strand of Knitting Worsted; use 4 threads of Pearl Cotton.

SIDE (Make 2) ••• Starting at center with yarn, ch 2. 1st rnd: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join with sl st. 2nd rnd: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around. Join. 3rd rnd: Ch 1, * sc in next sc, sc in base of next sc (long sc made), 3 sc in next sc (2 sc increased), long sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join. To keep continuity of pattern when increasing 2 sc, always make 3 sc between 2 long sc. 4th rnd: Ch 1, * long sc in next sc, sc in next long sc. Repeat from * around, increasing 2 sc three times in all at equal distances apart (6 sc increased). Join. 5th rnd: Ch 1, * sc in next long sc, long sc in next sc. Repeat from * around, increasing 6 sc as before, but do not have increases fall over those of previous rnd. Drop yarn. 6th rnd: Insert hook in next sc and draw 4 strands of Pearl Cotton through and repeat 4th rnd. Change to yarn in the same manner as Pearl Cotton was changed. 7th to 10th rnds incl: Using yarn, repeat 4th and 5th rnds alternately, joining each rnd. 11th to 20th rnds incl: Repeat 6th to 10th rnds incl twice.

GUSSET ••• 21st rnd: Ch 1, sc in back loop of each st around. Join. 22nd rnd: Ch 1, sc in each sc around. Join and break off.

HANDLE ••• With yarn, make a chain about 25 inches long. 1st rnd: 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, 5 sc in last ch; then, working along opposite side of starting chain, make sc in each ch across. Join. 2nd rnd: Sc in each sc around, increasing at curved ends to keep work flat. Drop yarn and change to Pearl Cotton. 3rd rnd: Ch 1, * sc in next sc, long sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Break off Pearl Cotton. 4th rnd: With yarn, * make long sc in next sc, sc in next long sc. Repeat from * around. Join and break off.

TAB ••• With yarn, ch 7 and make sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, 5 sc in last ch; then, working along opposite side of starting chain, make sc in each ch across. Join and break off.

With 4 strands of Pearl Cotton, sew the edges of the 2 Gussets together, leaving a 15 inch opening for zipper. Overcast the opening with Pearl Cotton. Line bag, using cardboard to stiffen sides and buckram for Gusset. Sew zipper across opening. Sew Tab to zipper pull. Sew Handle to bag.
