Crown. Beginning at tip, ch 5 join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 3 (to count as d c), 17 d c in ring. Join with sl st to 3rd st of ch-3. Join each rnd in this way. 2nd rnd: Ch 3 (to count as d c), d c in same st as sl st was made, 2 d c in each d c of previous rnd, picking up only the back loop of d cs. Join. 3rd rnd: Ch 5, * skip 1 d c, d c in next d c (picking up only the back loop of d cs), ch 2, repeat from * around. Join (18 sps). 4th rnd: Ch 6, * d c in next d c, ch 3, repeat from * around (18 sps). 5th rnd: * Ch 7, 1 d c in 4th ch from hook, working off the last 2 loops of d c very loosely, ch 3, 1 d c in loose st (this loose st will be called the center of clover), drop loop from hook, insert hook in 4th rnd in next d c to the right (last d c made in 4th rnd), draw dropped loop through, 1 d c in center of clover, ch 3, sl st in center of clover, ch 3, 1 d c in center of clover, ch 3, sl st in next d c (to the right) of 4th rnd (this completes lower half of one clover), repeat from * around (9 clovers). After the 9th clover, ch 3 and sl st in same st where joining sl st of 4th rnd was made. 6th rnd: Sl st over the 3 ch sts just made, 1 d c in center of clover which was made last (the 9th clover), * ch 3, sl st in center of same clover, ch 3, 2 d c in center of same clover, ch 3, sl st in center, ch 3, 1 d c in center, sl st to tip of incompleted petal of same clover (this completes one clover), ch 7, sl st to tip of incompleted petal of next clover, d c in center of same clover, repeat from * around. After the last clover is completed, ch 7, sl st to tip of petal at the 3rd sl st. 7th rnd: Ch 9, * s c in tip of free petal at top of clover, ch 5, s c in 4th ch of ch-7. Ch 5, repeat from * around, joining with sl st the last ch-5 to 5th ch of ch-9. 8th rnd: Ch 5, * skip 1 ch, d c in next ch, ch 2, skip 1 ch, d c in next ch, ch 2, skip next s c, d c in next ch, ch 2, repeat from * around, joining last ch 2 to 3rd st of ch-5 (thus making 3 d c over each ch-5 with ch 2s between d cs—56 sps). When working this rnd, care should be taken to work loosely enough in order to have work lie perfectly flat. 9th rnd: Ch 5, d c in next d c, * ch 2, d c in next d c, repeat from * around. Join last ch 2 to 3rd ch of ch-5 (56 sps). 10th rnd: Ch 3, * 2 d c in sp, d c in next d c, repeat from * around making 2 d c in last sp, sl st to 3rd st of ch-3. 11th rnd: Ch 3, d c in each d c of previous rnd, picking up only the back loop of d cs. 12th rnd: Ch 6, * skip 2 d c, d c in next d c, ch 3, repeat from * around, joining with a sl st the last ch-3 to 3rd st of ch-6 (56 sps). 13th, 14th and 15th rnds: Ch 6, * d c in next d c, ch 3, repeat from * around. Join last ch 3 to 3rd st of ch-6. After the 15th rnd, make a row of clovers as follows: 16th rnd: * Ch 9, 1 d c in 4th ch from hook, working off the last 2 loops of d c very loosely, ch 3, 1 d c in loose st (this loose st will be called the center of clover), drop loop from hook, skip next d c to the right, insert hook in next d c (of 15th rnd), draw dropped loop through, 1 d c in center of clover, ch 3, sl st in center of clover, ch 3, 1 d c in center of clover, ch 5, skip next d c (to the right) of 15th rnd, sl st in next d c (this completes lower half of one clover, repeat from * around (14 clovers). After the 14th clover, ch 5 and sl st in same st where joining sl st of 15th rnd was made. 17th rnd: Sl st over the 5 ch sts just made, and continue as for 6th rnd, making ch 11 in places where ch 7 were made in the 6th rnd. After the last clover is completed, ch 11, sl st to the tip of petal at the 5th sl st. 18th rnd: Ch 8, * s c in tip of free petal at top of clover, ch 6, s c in 6th ch of ch-11, ch 6, repeat from * around, joining with sl st the last ch-6 to 4th ch of ch-8. 19th rnd: Ch 6, * skip 2 sts, d c in next st, ch 3, repeat from * around, joining with sl st the last ch 3 to 3rd st of ch-6 (66 sps). 20th, 21st and 22nd rnds: Same 13th, 14th and 15th rnds. Do not break off but continue with brim.
Brim. 1st rnd: Ch 3, * 2 d c in next sp, d c in next d c, repeat from * around. Join with sl st to 3rd st of ch-3. Hereafter, pick up only the back loop of each d c of previous rnd. 2nd and 3rd rnds: Ch 3, d c in each d c. Join with sl st. 4th rnd: Ch 3, d c in each d c, increasing 1 d c in every 5th d c (to increase, make 2 d c in 1 st). Join. 5th rnd: Ch 3, d c in d c, increasing in every 6th d c. Join. 6th rnd: Ch 3, d c in each d c. Join and break off thread. To shape brim, hereafter work in rows breaking off thread at end of each row and attaching to beginning of previous row, as follows: 1st row: From the joining of last rnd, measure off 5 inches towards the left, attach thread at this point and make 1 s c in each of next 2 d c, 1 half d c in each of next 2 d c, d c in each d c to within 5 inches from joining, then 1 half d c in each of next 2 d c, 1 s c in each of next 2 d c, sl st in next d c. Break off. 2nd row: Attach thread to 1st d c at beginning of 1st row, 1 s c in each of next 2 d c, 1 half d c in each of next 2 d c, d c in each d c increasing 1 d c in every 7th d c to within 5 d c from end of previous row, then 1 half d c in each of next 2 d c, 1 s c in each of next 2 d c, sl st in next d c. Break off. 3rd and 4th rows: Same as 2nd row but without increasing. Break off. 5th row: Attach thread to 8th d c at beginning of 4th row, and work as before, increasing in every 9th d c, and working to within 13 d c from end of 4th row, then 2 half d c, 2 s c and 1 sl st. Break off. 6th and 7th rows: Same as 5th row but without increasing. Break off. To make brim stiff, work s c closely together all around edge of brim holding along wire and working over it so that it is completely covered. Fasten wire neatly at back and complete work with 1 rnd of sl sts.
Cord. Holding thread double, make a chain about 48 inches long, turn and make 1 sl st in each ch. Break off. Pass cord through 3rd row of Brim, passing it under 2 d c and over 2 d c, etc., and tie into a bow at right front.
