Headsize 21½
Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 2 balls of color 26 Nile Green, or Clark's O.N.T. Cronita, 3 balls. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 4. ¾ yd. millinery wire.
Crown. This consists of a top (shaped as illustrated in sketch) made of shell st, and a straight side band made of half d c, the ends of which fit to the sides of top.
Top. Starting at bottom, ch 32, turn. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook and s c in each ch across (31 s c). Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: 2 d c in 1st s c, * skip 1 s c, s c in next s c, skip 1 s c, 3 d c in next s c, repeat from * (8 3-d c shells), ending row with skip 1 s c, s c in last s c. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: 2 d c in 1st s c, * skip 1st d c of next shell, s c in center d c of same shell, 3 d c in next s c, repeat from * across, ending row with s c in turning ch-3. Ch 3, turn. Repeat the 3rd row until work measures 3 inches. Then break off.
Then to shape top, work as follows: 1st row: Ch 14, 3 d c in last s c of previous row, s c in center d c of next shell, and continue with pattern across the row. Then ch 15, turn. 2nd row: 2 d c in 4th ch from hook, * skip 1 ch, s c in next ch, skip 1 ch, 3 d c in next ch, repeat from * once, skip 1 ch, s c in next ch, skip 1 ch, 3 d c in next s c, and continue with pattern across to end of ch-14, ending with s c in last ch st. (There will be 14 shells in all.) Ch 3, turn. Work in pattern as usual for 23 rows. At end of 23rd row, ch 1, turn. Next row: S c in 2nd d c of 1st shell (1 shell decreased), continue in pattern across, ending with s c in 2nd d c of last shell of previous row. Ch 1, turn. Repeat last row, thus decreasing 1 shell at beginning of each row, until 4 shells remain. Break off. Sew oo to xx (see diagram). Sew other side to correspond.
Side Band. Ch 147 (to measure 18 inches), turn. 1st row: 1 half d c in 3rd ch from hook, 1 half d c in each ch st across. Ch 2, turn. 2nd row: 1 half d c in each half d c across. Ch 2, turn. Repeat 2nd row until band measures 3 inches. Break off. Sew one end of band to A—A of top (see diagram). Sew remainder of top to side band 1 inch from upper edge so that the top of the band will lap over. Sew opposite end of band to the other side of top to correspond. This completes crown.
Brim. Holding right side of top towards you, attach thread to top side band at loose edge 4 inches in from seam where band was joined at back. 1st row: S c in each half d c, increasing 1 s c in every 7th half d c (to increase, make 2 s c in 1 st), to within 4 inches from next seam. Break off. 2nd row: Attach thread to the beginning of 1st row, but beyond 3 half d c (of band) of beginning of 1st row, work s c in each s c across increasing in every 5th s c, then make s c in each of next 3 half d c of band. Break off. 3rd row: Same as 2nd row, but increasing in every 11th s c. 4th row: Same as 2nd row. Work 8 rows without increasing, but always beginning 3 sts before the starting of previous row and ending with 3 sts beyond the end of previous row. Then work a row of s c holding the millinery wire across the edge of brim. Turn, and work another row of s c over the wire to give a cord effect.
