Headsize 21-22
Materials: Clark's O.N.T. (8 balls) or J. & P. Coats (6 balls) Mercerized Crochet, size 10, White. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 4.
Crown. Using thread double, ch 3. 1st rnd: 10 half d c in 1st ch from hook, join with sl st to turning ch. Ch 1. 2nd rnd: * Make 1 half d c in next half d c by inserting hook only in the front loop of half d c, make 1 half d c in same half d c, this time inserting hook only in the back loop (thus making 2 half d c in 1 st to increase). Repeat from * around (20 half d c). Join with sl st to ch-1. 3rd rnd: Work in pattern straight as follows: * 1 half d c in next half d c inserting hook only in the front loop of half d c, 1 half d c in next half d c inserting hook only in the back loop of half d c, repeat from * around, thus alternating sts in front and back loops. 4th rnd: Same as 2nd rnd (40 half d c). Join as before. Hereafter do not join rnds but work around and around, marking the end of rnds with a safety pin. 5th, 6th and 7th rnds: Same as 3rd rnd. 8th rnd: Increase in every other st. 9th, 10th and 11th rnds: Work in pattern straight. 12th rnd: Work in pattern, increasing in every other half d c only. 13th, 14th and 15th rnds: Work in pattern straight. 16th rnd: Same as 12th rnd. 17th to 32nd rnds incl: Work in pattern straight. 33rd rnd: Work in pattern, increasing in every 5th half d c only. 34th to 39th rnds incl: Work in pattern straight.
Hat should now measure 11½ inches at lower edge (folded width). If a larger or a smaller headsize is desired, increase or decrease (to decrease, work off 2 half d c together as 1) as necessary. When hat measures 8½ inches deep, ch 3, turn and with the inside of hat towards you, work 1 rnd of pc sts as follows: * 1 d c in next half d c (hereafter inserting hook under the 2 loops of half d c), 1 pc st in next half d c, ch 1, skip 1 half d c, repeat from * around. Join and fasten off.
Bow. With single thread, ch 25, turn. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 2, turn. 2nd row: S c in each st. Ch 2, turn.
Repeat 2nd row until work measures 9 inches. Then fold work in half having the 1st and last rows come together, and work 2 rows of s c across, to join ends. This completes one half of bow. Make the other the same. Fold a pleat at joined end of each bow and attach to hat as in illustration. The joined ends of bows are turned under when arranging pleat, and are placed about ½ inch apart, giving effect of drawn through slits in hat.
Hat may be draped as desired.
