Use thread double throughout
GAUGE: 6 sc make 1 inch; 6 rnds make 1 inch.
HAT
Starting at center of crown with White, ch 2. 1st rnd: 7 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around. 3rd rnd: * 2 sc in next sc (1 sc increased), sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. 4th rnd: * 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc. Repeat from * around. Now inc 7 sc evenly on each rnd until piece measures 7 inches in diameter. Work without increasing until 5 more rnds are completed. Dec 7 sc evenly on each of next 5 rnds—to dec 1 sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc. Break off. Attach Red and sc in each sc around for 1 inch. Ch 1, turn. Next rnd: * 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc. Repeat from * around. Join and break off (mark joining for center back). Place a marker 3½ inches from each side of center back. Attach thread to first marker and work in short rows as follows: 1st row: Sl st in next 2 sc, sc in each sc across to within 3 sc of next marker, sl st in next 3 sc. Break off. 2nd and 3rd rows: Attach thread to sc preceding first sl st, sc over each sl st into sc below, sc in each sc across, sc over each sl st, sl st in next sc. Break off. At end of 3rd row do not break off but work all around as follows: 1st rnd: Sc in each sc across back on last rnd made, sc in each sc across short row and in each sl st. 2nd to 10th rnds incl: Sc in each sc around. Join and break off at end of 10th rnd.
BALL FRINGE (Make 16) … Using Red single, starting at center, ch 2. 1st rnd: 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 2nd rnd: Inc 4 sc evenly around. 3rd, 4th and 5th rnds: Sc in each sc around. 6th and 7th rnds: Dec 4 sc evenly around. Break off. Stuff firmly with scraps of cotton. Sew up opening. Sew around Hat, spacing them evenly apart.
BAG
Starting at center of bottom with Red, ch 27. 1st rnd: 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, 3 sc in last ch; working along opposite side of starting chain, make sc in each ch across. 2nd rnd: * 2 sc in next 3 sc, sc in each sc across to next 3 sc group. Repeat from * once more. 3rd to 7th rnds incl: Sc in each sc around, increasing 3 sc evenly on each end. Mark last increase rnd. Work without increasing until piece measures 5½ inches from last increase rnd. Join and break off.
FLAP … Fold Bag in half, place a marker in center sc of one side, mark off 5 sc on each side of center sc (back of Bag). 1st row: Attach thread to first sc, sc in same place, sc in next 10 sc, sl st in next sc. Turn. 2nd row: 2 sc in first sc, sc in next 9 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc on Bag. Turn. 3rd row: 2 sc in first sc, sc in each sc across Flap, 2 sc in last sc, sc in next sc on Bag. Repeat 3rd row, increasing where necessary to keep work flat until all sc's on back are used up. Break off.
HANDLE … Starting at narrow edge, ch 8. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures 16 inches. Break off. Fold lengthwise and sew edges together. Sew Handle to Bag.
Make 7 ball fringe as for Hat and sew to Flap. Cut a piece of cardboard to fit bottom. Line Bag with material. Sew in zipper.
