MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS KNIT-CRO-SHEEN, 7 balls of any color.
J. & P. COATS or CLARK'S O.N.T. PEARL COT­TON, size 5, 2 balls each of Steel Blue, Light Blue and Hunter's Green.
Bone Crochet Hook No. 8.
3 yards of narrow ribbon.

Use 4 threads throughout.

HAT—Front Motifs (Make 5) ... 1st rnd: Ch 4, 11 dc in 4th ch from hook. Join with sl st to 4th ch of ch-4. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, 2 dc in same place as sl st, * dc in next 2 dc, 3 dc in next dc. Repeat from * around, ending with 2 dc. Join. 3rd rnd: Ch 1, sc in same place as sl st, * 3 sc in next dc, sc in next 4 dc. Repeat from * around, ending with 3 sc. Join. Break off. Place 2 motifs adja­cent to each other and work through both thicknesses. Attach 4 threads to center sc of one corner and make sc in each sc to center sc of next corner (thus joining motifs). Break off. Join other motifs like this.

Back Motifs (Make 3) ... 1st rnd: Ch 4, 11 dc in 4th ch from hook. Join. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, 2 dc in same place as sl st, * dc in next 3 dc, 3 dc in next dc. Repeat from * around, ending with 3 dc. Join. 3rd rnd: Ch 1, sc in same place as sl st, in next dc make sc, ch 6 and sc; * sc in next 5 dc, 3 sc in next dc. Repeat from * around, ending with 4 sc. Join.

Join Back Motifs to the 1st, 3rd and 5th Front Motifs as before, having all joinings on same side (right side) and ch-6 loops of Back Motifs at bottom.

Small Circles (Make 4 each of Steel Blue and Light Blue) ... With 4 threads work 1st rnd same as for Front Motifs. Join and break off. Alternate these small circles and sew them to center of each motif with Green. Lace 1 yard of narrow ribbon through the ch-6 loops at bottom of Back Motifs and tie ends in a bow.

BAG—First Side ... Make 9 motifs exactly like Front Motifs of Hat. Join them as before to form 3 rows of 3 motifs. Then place these 3 rows together and join them as before. Make circles of Steel and Light Blue and sew to center of motifs. Make another side to correspond.

Gusset ... Make 9 Front Motifs and join them into a strip alternating circles at center as before. Place Gusset between the two sides and join Gusset to Sides as motifs were joined.

Heading ... Attach 4 threads to any sc at top edge of Bag. Ch 1 and make sc in each sc around for 3 rnds, joining each rnd. 4th rnd: Ch 4, * skip 1 sc, dc in next 2 sc, ch 1. Repeat from * around, ending with a dc. Join to 3rd ch of ch-4. 5th rnd: Ch 1, sc in next dc, * sc in ch-1 sp, sc in next 2 dc. Repeat from * around. Join. 6th rnd: Ch 1, sc in each sc around. Join. 7th rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 3, skip 1 sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join. Break off. Line Bag if de­sired. Run ribbon twice through the spaces on the 4th rnd of Heading. Sew ends together and draw up tight.
