MATERIALS:

CLARK'S O.N.T. or J. & P. COATS BEST SIX CORD MERCERIZED CRO­CHET, size 30, in any color.
Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 10 or 11.

FIRST MOTIF … Starting at center, ch 8, join with sl st to form a ring. 1st rnd: Ch 5 (to count as d c and ch-2), * d c in ring, ch 2. Repeat from * until 8 sps are made; join last ch 2 with sl st to 3rd st of ch-5 first made (9 sps). 2nd rnd: Sl st in sp, ch 3, 4 d c in same sp; make 5 d c in each sp around; join with sl st to top of ch 3. 3rd rnd: Ch 3, d c in next 4 d c, * ch 3, d c in next 5 d c. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 3, join with sl st to top of ch-3 first made. 4th rnd: Ch 3, d c in sl st, * d c in next 3 d c, 2 d c in next d c, ch 5, 2 d c in next d c. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 5, join to top of ch-3. 5th rnd: Ch 3, * d c in each d c, holding back the last loop of each d c on hook; thread over and draw through all loops on hook (a cluster made); ch 7, s c in sp, ch 7. Repeat from * around, join last ch-7 to tip of 1st cluster made. Fasten off.

SECOND MOTIF … Work as for First Motif to 4th rnd incl. 5th rnd: Ch 3 and complete a cluster as before, ch 7, s c in sp, ch 3, s c in loop to the right of a cluster on First Motif, ch 3, make next cluster on Second Motif, ch 3, skip cluster, and make s c in next loop on First Motif, ch 3, s c in next sp on Second Motif, ch 3, s c in next loop on First Motif, ch 3, make 3rd cluster on Second Motif, ch 3, skip cluster, and make s c in next loop on First Motif, ch 3, s c in next sp on Second Motif, ch 7, and complete rnd as for First Motif. Make necessary number of mo­tifs, joining as 2nd was joined to 1st.

HEADING … 1st row: Attach thread to 5th loop preceding 1st joining, ch 7, s c in 3rd st from hook (p), ch 2, ch-3 p, ch 1, s c in next loop. * (Ch 1, ch-3 p, ch 2, ch-3 p, ch 1, s c in next loop) twice; (ch 1, ch-3 p, ch 2, ch-3 p, ch 1, d c in next free loop) twice; ch 1, ch-3 p, ch 2, ch-3 p, ch 1, s c in next loop. Repeat from * across, ending with d c in 5th free loop of last motif. Ch 7, turn. 2nd row: S c in 3rd ch from hook (p) ch 2, ch-3 p, ch 1, s c between p's of next loop; * ch 1, ch-3 p, ch 2, ch-3 p, ch 1, s c between p's of next loop. Repeat from * across. Ch 5, turn. 3rd row: D c in s c, * ch 2, between p's of next loop make d c, ch 2 and d c. Repeat from * across. Fasten off.

SCALLOPS … Attach thread to 6th loop preceding 1st joining, make 5 s c in loop, * in each of next 3 loops make (2 s c, ch 3) 3 times and 2 s c; 2 s c in next loop, ch 3, 2 s c in same loop, ch 5, turn; in center ch-3 of next loop make d c, ch 5 and d c; ch 5, make s c in center ch-3 of next loop, turn. In each of next 3 loops make (2 s c, ch 3) 3 times and 2 s c; ch 1, make 2 s c in incompleted loop, ch 3, 2 s c in same loop. In next loop make (2 s c, ch 3) 3 times and 2 s c; in next 2 loops make 5 s c. Repeat from * across. Fasten off.
