Simplicity Collar and Cuffs Pattern #2214A

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. Mercerized Crochet, 3 balls of White, size 40. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 11 or 12. 3 small buttons.

Collar. Starting at neck edge, ch 4 and make d c in 4th ch from hook (1 sp made). Ch 3, turn. * D c in sp just made, ch 4, turn. Repeat from * until 96 sps are made, and work measures not less than 17½ inches across. Then, ch 4 and work across the row as follows: 1st row: D c in 1st sp, ch 1, d c in same sp, * ch 1, d c in next sp, ch 1, d c in same sp. Repeat from * until 36 groups of 2 d c are made. Then ** ch 1, in next sp make 3 d c with ch 1 between d c's, repeat from ** until 24 groups of 3 d c are made. Now continue as before making 2 d c in each sp with ch 1 between d c's (216 sps). Ch 4, turn. 2nd row: D c in 1st ch-1 sp, * ch 1, d c in next ch-1 sp, repeat from * across. Ch 4, turn. 3rd to 6th rows incl: Same as 2nd row. At end of 6th row, break off. 7th row: Attach thread to 1st sp of foundation row, then ch 4, d c in same sp, * ch 1, d c in 1st sp of next row, ch 1, d c in same sp, repeat from * to corner, then ch 1, in corner sp make 4 d c with ch 1 between d c's. Ch 1, d c in next ch-1 sp and continue making ch-1 sps (as in previous row) across to next corner, then make corner as before and continue down to correspond with opposite side. Ch 4, turn. 8th row: D c in 1st sp, ch 1, d c in next sp, and continue making ch-1 sps to corner, then ch 1 and make 4 d c in corner sp (1 bl made). * Then ch 1, and continue to make ch-1 sps as before until 17 ch-1 sps (counting from bl) are made, ch 1, 1 bl in next sp. Repeat from * across to next corner (13 bls), then make corner as before and complete row to correspond with beginning. Ch 4, turn. 9th row: D c in 1st sp, make ch-1 sps to within 1 sp from bl, ch 1, d c in next bl, ch 1, 1 bl in same sp, ch 1, 1 bl in next sp, ch 1, d c in same sp, 16 more sps, * ch 1, 1 bl in next sp, ch 1, 1 bl in next sp, 16 sps. Repeat from * across to next corner, and down other side to correspond. Ch 4, turn. 10th row: Work as for previous row, but making 3 bls (instead of 2) and having 16 sps between group of blocks. Ch 4, turn. 11th row: Work to correspond with 9th row. Ch 4, turn. 12th row: Work to correspond with 8th row. Ch 4, turn. 13th row: Work ch-1 sps, making ch 2 over each bl (instead of ch 1). Ch 4, turn. 14th row: Make sps as before, increasing 2 sps in each corner ch-2 sp and 1 sp in each of remaining ch-2 sps (to increase 1 sp, make 2 d c with ch-1 between in 1 sp). Ch 4, turn. 15th row: Make ch-1 sps. Ch 4, turn. 16th row: Same as previous row, but increasing 14 sps at equal distances apart. Ch 4, turn, and continue for edging as follows:

Edging: Skip 1st sp, 4 d c in next sp, * ch 1, skip 1 sp, 4 d c in next sp, repeat from * to corner. In corner sp make 4 d c, ch 1, 4 d c, then ch 1, and continue as before to next corner and down other side to correspond. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Make 4 d c (1 bl) in each ch-1 sps and ch 1 between each bl. Break off. Work a row of s c across neck edge. Make a ch-8 loop on one end of collar and sew a button on opposite end to correspond.

Cuffs.Starting at wrist, work as for collar making 40 sps for foundation row (to measure about 7½ inches). Then, ch 4 and work across the row as follows: 1st row: D c in 1st sp, * ch 1, d c in next sp, ch 1, d c in same sp. Repeat from * across. Ch 4, turn. 2nd row: D c in 1st ch-1 sp, ch 1, d c in same sp, * ch 1, d c in next ch-1 sp, repeat from * across. Ch 4, turn. 3rd to 7th rows incl: Repeat 2nd row. 8th row: 16 sps, * 1 bl, 16 sps, repeat from * across. Hereafter work as for collar, except do not work along the two short sides and omit increases. Work edging as before (around three sides). Fasten cuff in same way as for collar.
