Materials: Clark's O.N.T. Mercerized Crochet, 3 balls, size 60, White. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 12 or 13. 2 pearl buttons.

Starting at neck edge, ch 243 (to measure about 17 inches), turn. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in each of next 59 ch, * ch 2, d c in same place as last d c, d c in each of next 60 ch, repeat from * 2 more times. Ch 3, turn. 2nd to 9th rows incl: D c in each d c across, making 2 d c with ch 2 between in each ch-2 sp. Ch 3, turn. At end of 9th row, omit ch 3 to turn. Now work knot stitch pattern as follows: 1st row: * Draw loop on hook out ¼ inch, draw thread through, making a ch st of it. Insert hook between loop and single thread of this ch and make s c (1 knot stitch made). Work a similar knot st, then skip 2 d c of previous row and make s c in next d c. Repeat from * across (counting ch-2 sps as 2 sts). At end of row, make 2 (⅜-inch) knot sts to turn. 2nd row: * S c over double loop at right of 1st center knot of previous row, s c over double loop at left of same knot, 1 knot st. Repeat from * across. At end of row, make 2 (⅜-inch) knot sts to turn. 3rd row: Skip 1st 2 s c, * s c in each of 2 s c (of next knot), 2 knot sts. Repeat from * across, ending row with s c on each side of turning knot st. Make 2 (⅜-inch) knot sts to turn. 4th to 10th rows incl: Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately. At end of 10th row, ch 1, turn. 11th row: * S c in each of 2 s c, s c in center of knot, 2 s c in double loop of next knot st. Repeat from * across. Make 2 (⅜-inch) knot sts to turn. 12th row: * Skip 1 s c, s c in next s c, 2 knot sts. Repeat from * across. Make 2 (⅜-inch) knot sts to turn. 13th to 28th rows incl: Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately. Break off. Work two ch-8 buttonloops at right side of neck band, and sew buttons on opposite side to correspond.
