Starting at bottom, ch 70, turn. Working over a cord (or 4 strands of same thread), s c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch to within last ch, 5 s c in last ch (base of stem). Working along opposite side, make s c in each ch, sl st in 1st s c made. Fasten off.

Lower Section … Attach thread to center of 5 s c at base of stem, ch 5, skip 2 s c, d c in next s c, * ch 2, skip 1 s c, d c in next s c. Repeat from * 5 more times, ch 5, skip 1 s c, s c in next s c. Ch 5, turn. ** D c in next sp, ch 2. Repeat from ** across, ending with d c in last sp, ch 5, s c where thread was attached. Work along opposite side to correspond, ending with ch 5, s c in center st at base of stem. Now work over a cord as follows: 1st rnd: 6 s c in next sp, 3 s c in next 7 sps, 6 s c in next sp, 5 s c over cord only (behind stem). Work other half to correspond. Join. 2nd rnd: Ch 1, s c in next 7 s c, 7 s c over cord only, s c in same st as last s c (a cord loop); * s c in next 3 s c, 7 s c over cord only, s c in same place as last s c. Repeat from * 6 more times, s c in each s c to within 5 s c over cord, s c in next 5 s c. Work other half to correspond. Fasten off. Cut off cord. Attach thread to center s c between 1st 2 cord loops, and work as follows:
   1st row: * Ch 5, s c between next 2 loops. Repeat from * 5 more times, turn. 2nd row: Sl st to center of 1st loop, ch 5, s c in next loop. Repeat from * across. Repeat 2nd row until 1 loop remains. Fasten off. Work other side to correspond. Attach thread to 1st loop next to free end of stem and, working over cord throughout except for p's, make 3 s c in loop; in next 9 loops make 3 s c, ch 5, 3 s c; 3 s c in next loop, 5 s c over cord only, s c in s c following 8th cord loop, turn; 12 s c over cord, turn; s c in 2nd s c from hook, s c in next 10 s c, skip 3 s c (on cord loop rnd), s c in next s c (a rootlet), turn; s c in next 5 s c, 20 s c over cord only, s c at tip of rootlet, turn, s c in 2nd s c from hook, s c in each s c across, skip 4 s c at base, s c in next s c, turn; s c in next 5 s c, 7 s c over cord only, turn; s c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in next 10 s c, skip 3 s c at base, s c in next s c, 5 s c over cord only, 3 s c in next loop. Work remainder to correspond. Fasten off.

Leaf … 1st row: With wrong side of work toward you, attach thread to 12th s c from tip of stem, ch 20, s c where thread was attached, * s c in next 3 s c, ch 20, s c in same place as last s c. Repeat from * 6 more times. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Make 29 d c in 1st loop, * s c between next 2 loops, 30 d c in next loop. Repeat from * 6 more times. Fasten off. Overlap loops of leaf as in illustration, and sew in place.

Flower … Starting at base of stem, ch 45, s c in 20th ch from hook (this forms center). Working over cord, s c in each ch of stem, 5 s c in last ch. Working over cord along opposite side, make s c in each ch, turn, ** 21 s c over cord only, s c in 7th s c of stem, turn, s c in 2nd s c from hook, s c in next 3 s c, * ch 5, s c in next 4 s c. Repeat from * 3 more times. Over cord and ch of ring, make 2 s c, ch 5, 2 s c; turn. Repeat from * 5 more times, joining last s c on 1st row of each petal to 3rd p from tip of previous petal. Fasten off. Sew last p of last petal of flower to stem as in illustration. Sew base of flower stem to main stem.
