Irish Crochet Doily Pattern #7119

Materials: Choose one of the following threads in White or Ecru:
Clark's O.N.T. Mercerized Crochet, size 50, 3 balls.
J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, size 50, 2 balls.
J. & P. Coats Big Ball Best Six Cord Mercerized Crochet, size 50, 1 ball.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 13.

When completed, doily measures about 12½ inches in diameter.

First Motif. Starting at center, ch 2. 1st rnd: 8 s c in 2nd ch from hook. Hereafter pick up only the back loop of each sc. 2nd rnd: 2 s c in each s c around. 3rd rnd: S c in each s c around. 4th and 5th rnds: S c in 1st s c, * 2 s c in next s c, s c in next s c. Repeat from * around until there are 36 s c in the rnd. 6th rnd: * Ch 8, sl st in 5th ch from hook (1 p made). Repeat from * once more. Then ch 3, skip 2 s c, s c in next s c. Continue in this manner around (12 p-loops). Join last p-loop with sl st to base of first p-loop made. Break off. Attach thread at center of 1st p-loop and work as for 6th rnd, but making s c in center of each loop (instead of in s c). Break off.

Second Motif. Work as for first motif to 5th rnd incl. Then join to first motif as follows: 6th rnd: * Ch 8, p, ch 2, s c in center of p-loop of first motif, ch 7, p, ch 2, skip 2 s c on second motif, s c in next s c. Repeat from * once more, and complete rnd as 6th rnd of first motif was completed. Break off.

Third Motif. Work as before to 5th rnd incl. Then join first 2 loops to next 2 loops of first motif as second motif was joined to first. Ch 8, p, ch 6, sl st in center of p-loop on second motif (next to joining), turn. Work 8 s c over ch-6 just made, ch 6, p, ch 2, skip 2 s c of third motif, s c in next s c. Ch 8, p, ch 8, sl st in next loop of second motif, turn. Work 11 s c over ch-8 just made, ch 6, p, ch 2, skip 2 s c of third motif, s c in next s c, and complete rnd as before. Break off.

Make 4 more motifs, joining each to previous and to first motifs as third motif was joined, and joining the last motif to first and second motifs as well as to previous one. Break off.

Attach thread at center of 1st p-loop, counting to left of top s c-bar, and work as follows: 1st rnd: * 4 p-loops, ch 3, ch-5 p, ch 3, p, ch 2, d c in same p-loop as s c-bar was made, d c in 1st s c, ch 3, p, ch 3, p, ch 2, skip 2 s c, d c in next s c, skip 1 s c, d c in next s c, ch 3, p, ch 3, p, ch 2, skip 2 s c, d c in next s c, d c in same loop as s c-bar, s c in 1st loop. Repeat from * around (42 loops in rnd). Join with sl st. 2nd, 3rd and 4th rnds: P-loop in each p-loop around (42 loops). Join and break off. Make 21 more motifs same as second motif, but skipping 2 s c one time and 3 s c next time when making ch loops, thus having 10 loops instead of 12 loops around each motif, and joining each motif to center of doily as second motif was joined to first, but also joining 2 adjacent p-loops on each side of each motif. Then continue as before, making p-loops around for 5 more rnds (84 loops in rnd). Join and break off. Next rnd: Attach thread to center of p-loop, ch 8, * d c in next loop, ch 5. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-5 to 3rd st of ch-8 first made. Following rnd: 6 s c in each of 1st 2 ch-5 loops, 3 s c in next loop, ch 5, turn, * skip 3 s c, tr in next s c, ch 5, tr in same place as last tr, ch 2, skip 3 s c, s c in next s c, turn, 2 s c in ch-2 sp, ch 4 p, s c in same sp; 3 s c, 3 p's, 3 s c in next sp; s c, p, 2 s c in next sp; 3 s c in incompleted loop, 6 s c in next loop, 3 s c in next loop, ch 5, turn. Repeat from * around. Join and break off.
