Materials: Clark's Big Ball Mercerized Crochet, size 40, 1 ball of White or Ecru.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 12.
½ yd. linen, 18 inches wide.

When completed, large doily measures about 17½ x 13½ inches across center, and each small doily about 9½ inches in diameter.

Large Doily. Cut a linen oval measuring 12½ x 9 inches across center, and make a very narrow hem all around. 1st rnd: Work a rnd of s c (about 5 s c's to ¼ inch) all around edges, working over hem. Join with sl st in 1st s c made. 2nd rnd: S c in next s c, * ch 9, skip 4 s c, s c in next s c. Repeat from * around (132 loops). Join with sl st to 1st s c made (there should be a multiple of 6 loops). 3rd and 4th rnds: Sl st to 5th ch of ch-9, s c in same loop, ch 9, * s c in next loop, ch 9. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st to s c first made. 5th rnd: Sl st to 5th ch of next ch-9 loop, ch 5 (to count as tr and ch-1), 2 tr with ch-1 between each tr in same loop, * ch 1, 3 tr with ch-1 between each tr in next loop (3-tr group made). Repeat from * 4 more times, ** ch 7, in each of next 6 loops make a 3-tr group with ch-1 between each group. Repeat from ** around, ending rnd with ch 7, sl st in 4th ch of ch-5 first made. 6th rnd: Sl st to ch-1 sp between 2nd and 3rd tr's of next 3-tr group, ch 5 (to count as tr and ch-1), tr in next ch-1 sp, * ch 1, tr in next ch-1 sp. Repeat from * 12 more times (15 tr). *** Ch 7, s c in ch-7 loop; ch 4, sl st in 4th ch from hook (1 p made), s c in same ch-7 loop, ch 7, skip next ch-1 sp, ** 1 tr in next sp, ch 1. Repeat from ** 14 more times. Then repeat from *** around, ending rnd with ch 7, sl st in 4th ch of ch-5 first made. 7th rnd: Sl st to ch-1 sp between 2nd and 3rd tr's, ch 5, tr in next ch-1 sp, * ch 1, tr in next ch-1 sp. Repeat from * 9 more times, *** ch 7; ** in next ch-7 loop make: s c, p, s c. Repeat from ** once, ch 7, skip next ch-1 sp, make 12 tr as before. Then repeat from *** around, ending rnd with sl st as before. 8th, 9th and 10th rnds: Same as 7th rnd, but decreasing 3 tr on each rnd, as before, and increasing one ch-7 loop on each rnd. 11th rnd: * Ch 8, s c in next ch-7 loop. Repeat from * around. Join. 12th rnd: Sl st to center of 1st loop, and continue as for 11th rnd, but having ch-9 loops instead of ch-8 loops. 13th rnd: Same as 11th rnd, but having ch-12 loops instead of ch-9 loops. Join and break off.

Small Doilies (Make 2). Cut a circle of linen 5 inches in diameter, and work exactly as for large doily, being sure to have a multiple of 6 loops in 2nd rnd.
