Repeat from * around (12 loops). 3rd rnd: Sl st to center of 1st ch-7 loop, ch 3, 2 d c in same loop, ch 4, 3 d c in same loop. Into each ch-7 loop make 3 d c, ch 4 and 3 d c. Join to 3rd st of ch-3 first made. 4th rnd: Ch 3, s c in ch-4 loop, * ch 15, s c in same loop, ch 7, turn; skip 6 ch of last ch-15, d c in next ch, ch 7, turn. S c in same ch-4 as last s c, ch 3, s c between next 2 groups of 3 d c, ch 3, s c in next ch-4 loop. Repeat from * around, ending with s c between 2 groups of 3 d c. Fasten off. 5th rnd: Attach thread to center of ch-15 loop, 2 s c in same loop; * over bar of next d c make 3 d c, ch 3 and 3 d c; 2 s c in next ch-7 loop, 2 s c in next ch-15 loop. Repeat from * around, join. 6th rnd: Sl st in each st to ch-3 loop, sl st in loop, ch 3, 2 d c in same loop, ch 3, 3 d c in same loop. * Between 2 s c-groups make: d tr, ch 2, tr tr, ch 2, tr tr, ch 2 and d tr. Join to 3rd st of ch-3 first made. 7th rnd: Sl st to ch-3 loop, sl st in loop, ch 3, 2 d c in same loop, ch 3, 3 d c in same loop, * between next 2 tr tr make 3 d c, ch 3 and 3 d c. In next ch-3 loop make 3 d c, ch 3 and 3 d c. Repeat from * around, join. 8th rnd: Ch 3, s c in ch-3 loop, * ch 15, s c in same loop. Repeat from * 2 more times, ch 3, s c between next 2 d c-groups, ch 3, s c in next ch-3 loop, and continue thus around. Fasten off. 9th rnd: Attach thread to 1st ch-15 loop, 2 s c in same loop, * in next loop make 3 d c, ch 3 and 3 d c; 2 s c in next loop, 2 s c in next loop. Repeat from * around (72 loops). 8th rnd: Sl st to center of 1st ch-5 loop, ch 3, 2 d c in same loop, ch 3, 3 d c in same loop; * skip 1 loop, in next loop make 3 d c, ch 3 and 3 d c. Finishing … Starch crown and block into shape of an oval, 6 x 6½ inches at center. Starch and block brim, having outer edge 47½ inches in circumference, and inner edge 19 inches in circumference. Cut a piece of wire 50 inches long; overlap wire 2½ inches, and tie ends together securely with piece of thread. Place wire on underside of brim, and sew edge of brim over the wire neatly. Cut another piece of wire 21½ inches long, and join as before; sew to first round of d c on wrong side of brim. Sew points of crown to first round of d c. Now press brim with a moderately hot iron through a damp cloth. Cut 2 pieces of ribbon, each 20 inches long, and paste them together with rubber cement (thus making 1 band of double thickness). Sew this piece around d c-band of crown. Paste remainder of ribbon as before, and make a flat bow. Sew on bow as in illustration. Sew elastic to inside of crown, at both sides, adjusting to length desired.
