BERET 2325-A headsize 22-23
MATERIALS:
Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Pearl Cotton, size 5, 6 balls.
Milward's steel crocket book No. 6.
2 yds. grosgrain ribbon, 1¼ inches wide, of a contrasting color.
Beret is worked entirely in single crochet, picking up both loops of each st for 4 rnds, and picking up only the back loop of each st for alternate 4 rnds.
Starting at center, ch 2, make 8 s c in 2nd ch from hook. Join with sl st to 1st s c made. 1st rnd: Ch 1, s c in same st as sl st, 2 s c in each st around. Join with sl st to ch-1 first made. 2nd rnd: Ch 1, s c in joining, 2 s c in next s c (an increase), * s c in next s c, 2 s c in next s c. Repeat from * around, join (8 s c increased in rnd). 3rd rnd: Ch 1, s c in joining, s c in next s c, 2 s c in next s c, * s c in each of next 2 s c, 2 s c in next s c. Repeat from * around, join. 4th rnd: Ch 1, s c in joining, s c in each of next 2 s c, 2 s c in next s c, * s c in each of next 3 s c, 2 s c in next s c. Repeat from * around, join. On the next 4 rnds, pick up only the back loop of each s c. 5th rnd: Ch 1, s c in joining, s c in each of next 3 s c, 2 s c in next s c, * s c in each of next 4 s c, 2 s c in next s c. Repeat from * around, join. 6th rnd: Ch 1, s c in joining, s c in each of next 4 s c, 2 s c in next s c, * s c in each of next 5 s c, 2 s c in next s c. Repeat from * around, join. 7th rnd: Ch 1, s c in joining, s c in each of next 5 s c, 2 s c in next s c, * s c in each of next 6 s c, 2 s c in next s c. Repeat from * around, join. 8th rnd: Ch 1, s c in joining, s c in each of next 6 s c, 2 s c in next s c, * s c in each of next 7 s c, 2 s c in next s c. Repeat from * around, join. Continue in this manner, increasing 8 sts at equal distances apart on each rnd and alternating stripes every 4th rnd, until piece measures 10 inches in diameter. Continue in pattern, without increasing, for 4 rnds. Continuing in pattern, dec. 8 sts at equal distances apart on next rnd and each rnd thereafter until rnd measures 22 inches, or headsize desired—to decrease an s c, work off 2 s c as 1 s c. Break off.
Finishing … Cut 2 pieces of ribbon, each ½ inch longer than headsize desired. Using rubber cement, paste 2 pieces of ribbon together (thus making 1 band of double thickness). Sew ends of band together. Sew this piece to edge of beret neatly with over-and-over stitches. Paste remaining ribbon as before and make a flat bow. Sew bow on band as in illustration.
