MATERIALS:
J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 4 balls of any color for entire set.
2 yds. millinery wire.
Gauge: 4 squares make 1 inch; 3 rows of squares make 1 inch.
HAT 2326-A headsize 22-23
MATERIALS:
J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 2 balls.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 9.
1 yd. millinery wire.
A ribbon hat ornament.
Top … Starting at center ch 2, and make 6 s c in 2nd ch from hook. 1st rnd: 2 s c in each s c around (12 s c). 2nd rnd: * S c in next s c, 2 s c in next s c (an increase). Repeat from * around (18 s c). 3rd and subsequent rnds: S c in each s c around, making necessary increases to keep work flat, until piece measures 6 inches in diameter; sl st in next st. Break off.
Side … Starting at narrow edge, ch 45. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in each ch across (43 d c, counting turning ch-3 as 1 d c). Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Thread over and insert hook between 1st 2 d c, bring it out between next and following d c, * draw loop through, thread over and draw through 2 loops twice; thread over and insert hook between same 2 d c where hook was brought out, bring it out between next 2 d c, draw loop through, thread over and complete as for a d c; d c in next d c, thread over and insert hook between this and next d c, bring it out between that and following d c. Repeat from * across, making last d c in turning ch. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: * D c in each of next 2 d c, thread over and insert hook between last and next d c, bring it out between that and following d c, draw loop through and complete as for a d c. Repeat from * across, ending with 2 d c in each of last 2 d c and d c in turning ch-3. Ch 3, turn. These last 2 rows constitute the pattern. Work in pattern for 20 inches. Break off.
Finishing … Work a rnd of s c closely together all around edge of Top, holding wire along edge and working over it so that it is completely covered. Keep stretching work along wire as work progresses so that when wire is joined, Top will be absolutely flat and will measure about 6½ inches in diameter (to join wire, overlap wire about 2 inches before completing rnd, and work over both thicknesses). Break off. Sew narrow edges of Side together on wrong side. Holding right side of Top against right side of Side, pin one edge of Side to Top, just within wire, distributing any extra fullness of Side evenly all around. Sew Side securely to Top, just within wire. Turn right side out, having Top lower than upper edge of Side (giving a rolled effect). Sew ribbon ornament on Side, concealing seam, having one end of ribbon extend to center of Top. Pull this end of ribbon through to wrong side, and fasten. If desired, sew ribbon inside lower edge to insure against stretching.

Body … Starting at narrow edge, ch 117 and work as for Side of Hat 2326-A until piece is 14½ inches long, or slightly longer than circumference of Circular End. Break off.
Handle … Make a chain about 12 inches long. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: S c in each s c across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row for ¾ inch. Fold piece in half lengthwise, and sl st both long edges together. Break off.
