J. & P. COATS "KNIT-CRO-SHEEN," Art. A.64: 1 ball each of No. 43 Dk. Yellow and No. 123-A Flamingo, and J. & P. COATS or CLARK'S O.N.T. SIX STRAND EMBROIDERY FLOSS, Art. A. or B.11, 1 skein of No. 12 Black ... Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 7 ... A bone ring.
BODY ... Starting at neck edge with Dk. Yellow, ch 58. 1st row: 2 dc in 4th ch from hook (half shell made), * skip 2 ch, sc in next ch, skip 2 ch, 5 dc in next ch (shell made). Repeat from * across, ending with 2 dc in last ch, thread over, insert hook in same ch, draw loop through, thread over and draw through 2 loops, drop Yellow, pick up Flamingo and draw through remaining 2 loops thus changing color—always change color in this manner. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Working over unused color, sc in first dc, * 5 dc in next sc, sc in center dc of next shell. Repeat from * across, ending with shell in last sc, insert hook in top of turning chain, draw loop through, drop Flamingo, pick up Yellow and draw through 2 loops on hook. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: Working over unused color, make 2 dc in first sc, * sc in center dc of next shell, shell in next sc. Repeat from * across, ending with half shell in last sc. Change color. Ch 1, turn. 4th to 11th rows incl: Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately 4 more times. 12th row: Repeat 2nd row. Ch 1, turn. 13th row: Sc in first 3 dc of next shell, (shell in next sc, sc in next shell) 8 times. Change color. Ch 3, turn (half shell decreased at both ends of row). 14th to 17th rows incl: Work in pattern without decreasing. 18th row: Repeat 13th row. 19th and 20th rows: Work without decreasing. 21st row: Repeat 13th row. 22nd to 25th rows: Repeat last 3 rows once more, then repeat 13th row once more. Break off Flamingo at end of 25th row. 26th row: Sc in each st across. Break off Yellow.
TAIL ... Starting at center of outer edge with Yellow, ch 24. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 10 ch, 3 sc in next ch, sc in each remaining ch across. Ch 3, turn. Hereafter pick up back loop only. 2nd to 5th rows incl: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next ch, sc in each sc across, making 3 sc in center sc of 3 sc group. Ch 3, turn. 6th row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next ch, sc in each sc across to within center sc of 3 sc group. Ch 1, turn. 7th row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 3, turn. 8th row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next ch, sc in each sc across to within last 2 sc. Ch 1, turn. 9th to 12th rows incl: Repeat 7th and 8th rows alternately 2 more times. Break off at end of 12th row. Skip center sc on last complete row. Attach thread to next sc, sc in same place, and complete other side of Tail to correspond. Sew straight edge to Body.
HEAD ... Starting at straight edge with Yellow ch 6. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. Hereafter pick up back loop only. 2nd row: 2 sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: * Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc (1 sc increased). Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: * Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. 5th to 21st rows incl: Inc 3 sc evenly across. Ch 1, turn. Break off. Sew straight edge of Head to Body.
Embroider Eye and Mouth with Black Embroidery Floss. Make another piece the same way.
For Padding, see patternbook page. With wrong side facing, attach Flamingo through to Tail and, working through both thicknesses, sc closely around. Join and break off. With Flamingo, sc closely around bone ring. Sew in place.
