MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS "KNIT-CRO-SHEEN," Art. A.64: 2 balls of No. 49 Char­treuse Green and 1 ball each of No. 12 Black and No. 65 Beauty Pink ... Milwards Steel Crochet Hooks No. 4 and No. 7 ... A bone ring.

FRONT ... Starting at base of Fan with a double strand of Chartreuse and No. 4 hook, ch 2. 1st row: 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 2 sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. 3rd, 4th and 5th rows: 2 sc in first sc, sc in each sc across, 2 sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. 6th to 11th rows incl: 2 sc in first sc, sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn (18 sc on 11th row). Break off Chartreuse. 12th row: Attach a double strand of Black at beginning of last row. Picking up back loop of each sc, sc in each sc across. Break off Black. 13th row: Picking up back loop of each sc, attach a double strand of Chartreuse at beginning of row, ch 3, dc in next 2 sc, * ch 1, dc in next 3 sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 3, turn. 14th row: Working through both loops of each dc, skip first dc, 2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc, * ch 1, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc. Repeat from * across, ending with dc in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. 15th row: Skip first dc, dc in next 3 dc, * ch 1, dc in each dc of next group. Repeat from * across, ending with dc in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. 16th row: Dc in each dc of next group, 2 dc in last dc, * ch 1, 2 dc in first dc, dc in each dc of next group, 2 dc in last dc. Repeat from * across, ending with 2 dc in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. 17th and 18th rows: Skip first dc, dc in each dc of next group, * ch 1, dc in each dc of next group. Repeat from * across, ending with dc in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. 19th row: Repeat 16th row. Ch 3, turn. 20th, 21st and 22nd rows: Repeat 17th row. Ch 3, turn. 23rd row: Repeat 16th row. Ch 3, turn. 24th row: Skip first dc, dc in next dc, tr in next 2 dc, 2 d tr in next 2 dc, tr in next 2 dc, dc in next 2 dc—scallop completed—(ch 1, dc in each dc of next group) 4 times; complete another scallop over next group, ending with dc in top of turning chain. Break off Chartreuse and turn. 25th row: Attach thread to first dc of 2nd group from right, ch 3, complete another scallop over this group, (ch 1, dc in each dc of next group) twice; ch 1, complete another scallop over next group. Break off and turn. 26th row: Attach thread to first dc of 3rd group from right, ch 3, complete another scallop, ch 1, complete another scallop. Break off.

STRIPE ... With right side facing, and using a double strand of Black and No. 4 hook, attach thread to 3rd free sc loop on 12th row, (ch 2, sc into sp of next row) 12 times. Break off. Skip 2 sc on 12th row, attach Black in next sc and complete another stripe. Make 3 more stripes in same manner. Using a double strand of Black embroider remaining part of stripes at base of Fan.

TRIMMING ... Using a single strand of Black and No. 7 hook, sc closely around entire pot holder.

FLOWER (Make 9) ... With a single strand of Beauty Pink and No. 7 hook, ch 4. 1st rnd: Dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 3, sl st in same place, (ch 3, dc in same place, ch 3, sl st in same place) 3 times. Break off. Sew Flowers in place on Fan.

With a single strand of Beauty Pink embroider French knots on Fan.

BACK ... Work exactly as for Front.

EDGING ... Attach a single strand of Black to wide edge of Fan and, working through both thicknesses, sc in first sc, * ch 6, sc in 3rd ch from hook (picot made), ch 3, skip 1 sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * across. Break off. With Black, sc closely around bone ring. Sew in place.
