Cherries Potholder Pattern #9442

MATERIALS: J. & P. Coats or Clark’s O.N.T. Pearl Cotton, Size 5. 1 ball each of Ecru and Red … Steel Crochet Hook No. 7 …. A bone ring … Scraps of red and green felt.

Starting at center with Ecru, ch 20 (to measure 2½ inches). 1st rnd: 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, 3 sc in last ch. Working along opposite side of foundation chain, sc in each ch across, ending with sc where first 2 sc were made. Sl st in 1st sc. Hereafter pick up only the back loop of each st. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, dc in same place as sl st, 2 dc in each of next 3 sc (4 dc increased), dc in each sc to within 1 sc of the 3-sc group at other end, 2 dc in each of next 6 sc (6 more dc increased), dc in each st around, ending with 2 dc in each of last 2 sc (12 dc increased in rnd). Sl st in top st of starting chain. 3rd rnd: Sc in each st around, increasing 3 sc evenly at each curved end. Join. 4th rnd: Ch 3, dc in each st around, increasing 6 dc evenly at each curved end. Join. Repeat the 3rd and 4th rnds alternately until piece measures 5 x 6¾ inches, ending with an sc row. Join and break off. Attach Red and work a row of dc and a row of sc, increasing at curved ends as before to keep work flat. Break off.

Cut 4 cherries of the red felt, leaves and stems of the green. Sew leaves and cherries in place. For padding, see page 15. Sew on bone ring.

PADDING … Cut flannel or cotton batting slightly smaller, and lining material slightly larger, than crocheted piece. Place padding between crocheted piece and lining. Turn under edges of lining and sew to edges of crocheted piece with neat over-and-over stitches. For pot holders consisting of 2 crocheted pieces, insert padding between crochet and sew up edges.
