Potholder Set Pattern #9424

MATERIALS: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 1 ball of Cream … J. & P. Coats or Clark's O.N.T. Pearl Cotton, Size 5, 1 ball of Brown for ridges … Steel Crochet Hook No. 5 … 2 bone rings … These materials will make a set of 2 pot holders.

Use thread double throughout.

ROUND POT HOLDER … Starting at center with Cream, ch 6. Join with sl st. 1st rnd: Ch 4, 24 tr in ring, sl st in 1st tr. Hereafter pick up only back loop of each st. 2nd rnd: Ch 4, 2 tr in each tr around. Join. 3rd, 4th and 5th rnds: Ch 4, tr in each tr around, increasing 24 tr evenly around —to inc 1 tr, make 2 tr in 1 st. Join each rnd. Break off at end of 5th rnd. With double strand of Pearl Cotton work sc on the free loop of each st around, having wrong side of sc’s toward center. Join each rnd and break off.

SQUARE POT HOLDER … With Cream, ch 6. Join with sl st. 1st rnd: Ch 4, 24 tr in ring. Join. Hereafter pick up only back loop of each st. 2nd rnd: Ch 4, tr in next 4 tr, * in next tr make 2 tr, 3 d tr and 2 tr; tr in next 5 tr. Repeat from * around. Join. 3rd, 4th and 5th rnds: Ch 4, tr in each st around, making 2 tr, 3 d tr and 2 tr in center d tr of each 3-d tr group (corners). Join each rnd. Break off at end of 5th rnd. Work ridges with Pearl Cotton as for Round Pot Holder. Sew a bone ring on each pot holder.

PADDING … Cut flannel or cotton batting slightly smaller, and lining material slightly larger, than crocheted piece. Place padding between crocheted piece and lining. Turn under edges of lining and sew to edges of crocheted piece with neat over-and-over stitches. For pot holders consisting of 2 crocheted pieces, insert padding between crochet and sew up edges.
