MATERIALS: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 3 balls of Red, 3 balls of Green, 2 balls of Yellow and 2 balls of Black.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 9.
1 yd. of cotton crash, 50 inches wide.

Completed center mat measures about 14 x 36 inches; place mats measure about 12 x 18 inches.

CENTER MAT … Cut material 12 x 34 inches. Make a narrow hem all around. 1st rnd: With Red, s c closely around edges, making 3 s c in each corner. Fasten off. 2nd rnd: With Black, s c around, making 3 s c in center of 3 corner s c. Fasten off. 3rd rnd: With Yellow, * s c in next 3 s c, skip 1 s c, insert hook at base of next st on previous row and complete as for an s c (long s c); insert hook at base of s c skipped on previous row and make a long s c; skip 2 s c behind the 2 long s c. Repeat from * around, increasing at corners. Fasten off. 4th rnd: Attach Black and s c in each st, increasing at corners. Fasten off. 5th rnd: Attach Red and work as for 3rd rnd. 6th, 7th and 8th rnds: Attach Green and repeat 4th rnd. 9th rnd: With Yellow ** s c in next 3 sts, insert hook at base of next st on 3rd rnd below, * pull loop through, thread over, insert hook in same place. Repeat from * once more, pull loop through, thread over and pull through all loops on hook, skip s c behind this last st made and repeat from ** around, increasing at corners. Join. 10th rnd: With Yellow, repeat 4th rnd. 11th rnd: With Red, s c in next s c, * make a long s c, skip s c behind long s c, s c in next 3 sts. Repeat from * around, increasing at corners. Join. 12th rnd: With Red, repeat 4th rnd. 13th and 14th rnds: With Green, repeat 9th and 10th rnds. Fasten off. 15th and 16th rnds: With Black, repeat 11th and 12th rnds. Fasten off at end of 16th rnd.

PLACE MATS … Cut 4 pieces of material, each 10 x 16 inches. Complete as for center mat.
