MATERIALS: Use one of the following threads in size 50:
Clark's O.N.T. Mercerized Crochet, 18 balls of White or Ecru, or 21 balls of any color.
J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, 13 balls of White or Ecru, or 18 balls of any color.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 12 or 13.
2¼ yds. handkerchief linen, 36 inches wide.

This amount of materials is sufficient for 6 place mats, each about 12 x 18½ inches, and a center mat about 15½ x 34 inches.

GAUGE: 7 sps make 1 inch; 7 rows make 1 inch.

CENTER MAT … Starting at bottom of chart, make a chain 36 inches long (21 ch sts to 1 inch). 1st row: D c in 8th ch from hook, ch 2, skip 2 ch, d c in next ch (2 sps), d c in next 3 ch (1 bl), ch 2, skip 2 ch, d c in next ch; make 8 more sps, * 1 bl, 9 sps, 1 bl, 5 sps, 1 bl, 9 sps. Repeat from * 6 more times, 1 bl, 9 sps, 1 bl, 2 sps. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 5, turn. 2nd row: D c in next d c, ch 2, d c in next 4 d c; (2 d c in sp, d c in next d c) 4 times—5 bls made—5 sps, 1 bl, 5 sps, 5 bls, 3 sps. This brings work to end of 2nd row on chart. Repeat 2nd row 7 more times, ending with 5 bls, 2 sps (thus finishing end of row to correspond with beginning). Starting at 3rd row, follow chart to top, always repeating design 7 more times and ending each row to correspond with beginning. When work reaches top row, reverse chart and work back to 1st row. Fasten off. Block this piece to measure 10½ x 29 inches.

   Cut 2 strips of linen 5 x 34 inches, and 2 strips 5 x 16 inches. Double the 5-inch width to measure 2½ inches, and press fold. Sew together 2 short and 2 long strips to form an oblong, mitering all corners and making inner edges correspond with measurements of lace. Turn under the edges of linen, and sew neatly to edge of lace.

PLACE MATS … Starting at arrow on chart, ch 314 (21 ch sts to 1 inch). 1st row: D c in 8th ch from hook, ch 2, skip 2 ch, d c in next ch; make 8 more sps, d c in next 3 ch; * 3 sps, 1 bl, 10 sps, 1 bl, 10 sps, 1 bl. Repeat from * across, ending with 10 sps. Ch 5, turn. 2nd row: D c in next d c (sp over sp), make 9 more sps, d c in next 3 d c (bl over bl), * 3 sps, 1 bl, 10 sps, 1 bl, 10 sps, 1 bl. Repeat from * across, ending with 10 sps. Ch 5, turn. Continue to top row of chart, always repeating design necessary number of times and ending rows to correspond with beginning. Then reverse chart and work back to arrow on chart. Fasten off. Block this piece to measure 8 x 14½ inches. Cut 2 strips of linen 5 x 19 inches, and 2 strips 5 x 13 inches. Finish as for center mat. This completes one place mat.
