Designed as a toy to dangle from the rail of crib or carriage, these also can be pin cushions. May be in Red and White as called for in the instructions, or your favorite colors for a child.

MATERIALS REQUIRED:
Lily Sugar 'N Cream Yarn Art. 930 in Red and White.
or
Lily Cotton Yarn Art. 600
Stuffing material.
Crochet hook size 1.

BODY—In White, ch 2, 7 sc in first st. In both loops, (2 sc in next sc) 7 times. (Mark end of row to help counting.) (1 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next) 7 times. * (Sc in 2 sc, 2 sc in next) 7 times. (Sc in 3 sc, 2 sc in next) 7 times. (Sc in 4 sc, 2 sc in next) 7 times. (Sc in 5 sc, 2 sc in next) 7 times. Sc in 3, 2 sc in next, (sc in 6, 2 sc in next) 6 times. Sc in 4, 2 sc in next, (sc in 7 sc, 2 sc in next) 6 times, sc in 5, sl st in next. Fasten off. Fold crosswise in center with wrong side out and sew together through 1 loop of each st, leaving a small opening, stuff with cotton or rags and close opening.

HEAD—Repeat to *. 1 sc, 1 sl st and fasten off. Make 2. Make a Red French Knot in center for eye, place right side together and sew together and stuff. Sew on top of one end of body.

BEAK—In Red, ch 8, sk last st, (1 sl st, 1 sc, 3 hdc, 1 sc and 1 sl st) on ch. Fasten off, fold crosswise in center, sew together and sew wide end to bottom of head a" above body.

TOPKNOT—Join Red to top of head 1" above body, (ch 3, sc in next st) 5 times. Fasten off.

TAIL—In White, ch 5, 4 sc on ch. ROW 2—In back loops, ch 2, turn, hdc in 2 sts, sc in 2 sts. ROW 3— Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in 2 hdc. Repeat Rows 2, 3 and 2. Ch 1, turn, 2 sc and 1 hdc, 2 hdc in end hdc. Ch 2, turn, 3 hdc and 1 sc, 2 sc in end sc. Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in last sc, sc in 2 sts, hdc in 2 sts, 2 hdc in end hdc. Ch 2, turn, 4 hdc and 3 sc, 2 sc in end sc. Fasten off. Join Red to starting st, * ch 1, (dc, ch 1, dc) in center of rib, ch 1, sc between ribs. Repeat from * 4 times across. Fasten off. Make a second piece, turning it over before making shell edge. Place back-to-back and sew together across ends, then sew around end of body with wide end of tail at top. Make 2 Birds, reversing colors.

CORD—Cut 2 strands of White 2 yds. long, (double and twist tightly) twice. Tie a knot 1" from loose end of fringe out. Sew other ends to center of back of Red Bird. Make a second cord starting with 56" strands and sew to other Bird. Knot cords together 2" from top.
