Cluster Stitch Afghan Pattern #687

Size 46 x 66 inches

MATERIAL:
7 skeins Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein) navy
5 skeins Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein) french blue
4 skeins Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein) light grey
1 aluminum afghan crochet hook 10" long No. 6 or G

GAUGE: 4 sts. = 1 inch, 4 rows = 1 inch

NAVY AFGHAN STRIP (make 4):
     Ch. 24. 1st row: insert needle in 2nd st. from hook and pull up a loop, retain loop on needle, repeat in every ch. across row. (This is half of afghan st. row) 2nd row: yarn over hook, pull through first loop * yarn over hook, pull through 2 loops, repeat from * across row until only 1 loop is left on hook. (This finishes afghan st. row) 3rd row: pull up a loop through the 2nd and all succeeding vertical bars to within 1 st. of end, insert hook through both vertical bars of end st. (to give this side of work a firm edge), retaining all loops on hook. 4th row: Work sts. off as 2nd row. Repeat 3rd and 4th row alternately until piece measures 64 inch, (approx. 266 rows). Next row: Work slip st. taking up the vertical bars of all sts., fasten off.

CLUSTER STITCH STRIP (make 3):
     With french blue ch. 33 and work in afghan st. for 7 rows. 8th row: † draw up a loop in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th vertical bars (5 loops on hook), * y.o., draw up a loop in 3rd vertical bar 3 rows below, y.o., draw through 1 loop, y.o., draw through 2 loops, y.o., draw through 1 loop (6 loops on hook), y.o. hook twice, draw up a loop in 4th vertical bar 4 rows below, y.o., draw through 1 loop, y.o., draw through 2 loops, y.o., draw through 2 loops, y.o., draw through 1 loop (7 loops on hook), y.o. hook 3 times, draw up a loop in 5th vertical bar 5 rows below, y.o., draw through 1 loop, y.o., draw through 2 loops, y.o., draw through 2 loops, y.o., draw through 2 loops (8 loops on hook) y.o. hook twice, draw up a loop in 6th vertical bar 4 rows below, y.o., draw through 1 loop, y.o., draw through 2 loops, y.o., draw through 2 loops, y.o., draw through 1 loop, (9 loops on hook) y.o., draw up a loop in 7th vertical bar 3 rows below, y.o., draw through 1 loop, y.o., draw through 2 loops, y.o., draw through 1 loop (10 loops on hook) y.o. and draw through 6 loops on hook (a cluster made), draw up a loop in each of the next 6 vertical bars retaining all loops on hook, repeat from * across row (5 clusters in row) ending with draw up a loop in each of the last 4 vertical bars (33 loops on hook). 9th row: Work off loops as for plain afghan st. row. Work even in afghan st. for 6 rows. † Repeat from † of 8th row to † until 5 cluster patterns are completed. Work 2 rows afghan st. Change to light grey and work in pattern as french blue until 5 cluster patterns are completed. Work 2 rows afghan st. Cont. to work this way alternating french blue and light grey until 7 sections are completed (starting and ending with french blue). Work 1 row slip st. taking up the vertical bars of all sts. Fasten off.

FINISHING:
     Alternating a navy and a cluster pattern strip, sew up afghan on wrong side with an overhand stitch, taking up top thread of each st. on each edge only.

BORDER:
     With navy work 1 row s.c. around the entire afghan working 3 s.c. in each corner st. With light grey work 1 row s.c. the same way. With french blue work * 1 s.c. in each of the next 4 sts., ch. 4, repeat from * around the entire afghan. Fasten off and block to size.
