Child's Afghan Pattern #686

Size 36 x 56 inches

MATERIAL:
5 skeins Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein) eggshell
5 skeins Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein) red
Small amount of black for embroidery
1 afghan crochet hook 10" long, size 6 or G

GAUGE:  4½ sts. = 1 inch, 4 rows = 1 inch

AFGHAN STITCH SQUARES: (Make 17 red and 18 eggshell)
     Ch. 30. 1st row: insert needle in 2nd st. from hook and draw up a loop, retain loop on needle, repeat in every ch. across row. (This is half of afghan st. row). 2nd row: y.o. hook, pull through first loop * y.o. hook, pull through 2 loops, repeat from * across row until only 1 loop is left on hook. (This finishes afghan st. row). 3rd row: draw up a loop through the 2nd and all succeeding vertical bars to within 1 st. of end, insert hook through both vertical bars of end st. (to give this side of work a firm edge), retaining all loops on hook. 4th row: Work sts. off as 2nd row. Repeat 3rd and 4th row alternately until piece has 29 rows. 30th row: Work 1 row slip st. taking up the vertical bars of all sts., fasten off.

FINISHING:
     With tapestry needle and following charts No. 1-9 embroider 12 eggshell squares with red, (2 dogs, 2 cats, 2 fish, 2 swans, 1 boat, 1 boy and girl, 1 duck, 1 baby chicken) and the red center square (house) with eggshell. Arrange squares 5 across and 5 in length, alternating colors in checkerboard fashion, arranging the designs as shown in picture. Sew squares together from wrong side with an overhand stitch, taking up top thread of each st. on each edge only.

BORDER:
     With tan and right side of afghan facing you, work 2 rows s.c. all around, working 3 s.c. in each corner st. Work 2 rows s.c. in red the same way. With red work last row as follows: * 1 s.c. and 2 d.c. in one stitch, skip 2, repeat from * around the entire afghan. Fasten off and block to size.
