10 skeins Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein) beige
3 skeins Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein) dark green
1 skein Knitting Worsted (2 oz. skein) light green
1 aluminum afghan crochet hook 10" long No. 8 or H
GAUGE: 9 sts. = 2 inch, 7 rows = 2 inch
AFGHAN STITCH SQUARE: (Make 18)
With No. 8 afghan hook ch. 39. 1st row: insert needle in 2nd st. from hook and pull up a loop, retain loop on needle, repeat in every ch. across row. (This is half of afghan st. row). 2nd row: yarn over hook, pull through first loop * yarn over hook, pull through 2 loops, repeat from * across row until only 1 loop is left on hook. (This finishes afghan st. row). 3rd row: pull up a loop through the 2nd and all succeeding vertical bars to within 1 st. of end, insert hook through both vertical bars of end st. (to give this side of work a firm edge), retaining all loops on hook. 4th row: Work sts. off as 2nd row. Repeat 3rd and 4th row alternately until piece has 29 rows. Work 1 row of slip st. taking up the vertical bars of all sts. Fasten off.
REVERSED AFGHAN STITCH SQUARE: (Make 17)
With No. 8 afghan hook ch. 39. Work 1 row afghan st. Start pattern. 1st row: * yarn in front of hook, insert hook in vertical bar of next st., bring yarn below hook and to back of work, y.o. and through the vertical bar on hook (a "purled" st.), yarn in back of work, draw up a loop in next vertical bar (plain afghan st.), repeat from * across row. 2nd row: work off loops as for plain afghan st. 3rd row: * Work 1 plain afghan st., and 1 purled afghan st., repeat from * across row. 4th row: Work off loops as for plain afghan st. Repeat these 4 rows until piece has 29 rows. 30th row: Work 1 row slip st. taking up the vertical bars of all sts., fasten off.
FINISHING:
With dark green crochet 1 row s.c. around each square working 3 s.c. in each corner st. Embroider the 18 afghan stitch squares with either the contemporary or the rose design following Chart No. 10 or Chart No. 11. Joining: Arrange squares 5 across and 7 in length alternating 1 embroidered and 1 reversed afghan st. square. With dark green sew squares tog. from wrong side with an overhand st., taking up top thread of each st. on each edge only.
BORDER:
With dark green work 5 rows s.c. around the entire afghan. Work 3 s.c. in each corner st. Fasten off. With beige starting in a corner st. insert needle 2 rows below and make 5 d.c. in same st., * ch. 1, skip 2, 3 d.c. in next st. inserting needle 2 rows below. Repeat from * to next corner. Work corner as before and cont. to work rem. 3 sides and corners as first one. Fasten off and block to size.
