FILL-IN MOTIF … Starting at center, ch 2. Hereafter do not join rnds, but carry a colored thread up between first and last st of each rnd to indicate beg of rnd. 1st rnd: Make 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around—16 sc. 3rd rnd: * 2 sc in next sc—1 sc increased; sc in next sc. Repeat from * around, ending with an h dc. Join to first sc. Break off and fasten.
Work around outer edge as follows: Attach thread to free ch-5 loop preceding any joining between motifs. 1st rnd: Make 3 sc in same loop, * 2 d tr in next sc, holding back on hook the last loop of each d tr, d tr in last sc used, skip joining between motifs, d tr in next sc, thread over and draw through all loops on hook—joint d tr made; 2 d tr in last sc used, (3 sc in next ch-5 loop, ch 2) twice; 3 sc in next loop. Repeat last 2 rnds alternately until side measures 2¼ inches, ending with sl st rnd. Next rnd: Work as for 3rd rnd, decreasing 6 sc evenly spaced—to dec 1 sc, draw up a loop in each of 2 sc, thread over and draw through all loops on hook. Following 3 rnds: Sc in each sc around. Join. At end of last rnd, break off and fasten. Turn the last 4 rnds under for hatband and sew in place.
