Afghan Hook No. 4 or Size F.
GAUGE: 7 sts = 1¼ inches; 5 rows = 1 inch.
SOLE … Starting at heel with Brown, ch 9 (10, 11). 1st row—First Half of Row: Retaining all loops on hook, draw up a loop in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (Fig. A). There are the same number of loops on hook as there were chain sts. Second Half of Row: Yarn over and draw through 1 loop, * yarn over and draw through 2 loops. Repeat from * across (Fig. B). The loop which remains always counts as the first st of next row (Fig. C). 2nd row—First Half of Row: Retaining all loops on hook, draw up a loop in first vertical bar—1 loop increased at beg of row, and in each vertical bar across to within last vertical bar, draw up a loop in the ch before the next bar, draw up a loop in the last bar—1 loop increased at end of First Half of Row. Second Half of Row: Work as for Second Half of first row. 3rd row: Repeat 2nd row. There are 13 (14, 15) loops on First Half of Row. 4th row—First Half of Row: Retaining all loops on hook, draw up a loop in 2nd vertical bar and in each vertical bar across to within last vertical bar (Fig. D); insert hook through last vertical bar and the st directly behind it (arrow on Fig. D) and draw up a loop (this makes a firm edge). There are the same number of loops as on last row. Second Half of Row: Yarn over and draw through 1 loop, * yarn over and draw through 2 loops. Repeat from * across. Repeat 4th row for pattern. The last row was worked even. Next 14 (15,17) rows: Repeat 4th row. Following row: Repeat 2nd row. Work even for 4 rows. Next row: Repeat 2nd row. Work even for 11 (13, 16) rows. Dec row—First Half of Row: Insert hook in 2nd and 3rd vertical bars and draw up a loop—dec made; draw up a loop in each vertical bar across to within last 3 vertical bars, dec 1 loop over next 2 vertical bars, draw up a loop in last vertical bar. Second Half of Row: Repeat Second Half of first row. Work 1 row even. Repeat last 2 rows once more. Next 3 rows: Repeat Dec row. At end of last row break off and fasten.
UPPER … Starting at toe with Aqua, ch 10 (11, 12). 1st row: Repeat first row of Sole. 2nd row—First Half of Row: Repeat First Half of 2nd row of Sole. Drop Aqua, attach Brown. Second Half of Row: With Brown, repeat Second Half of 2nd row. 3rd row—First Half of Row: Work across, increasing 1 loop at both ends. Second Half of Row: Complete row as before. 4th row—First Half of Row: Work across, increasing 1 loop at both ends. Drop Brown. Second Half of Row: With Aqua, complete row as before. 5th row—First Half of Row: Work across, increasing 1 loop at both ends. Second Half of Row: Complete row as before. 6th row—First Half of Row: Work across, increasing 1 loop at both ends. Drop Aqua. Second Half of Row: With Brown, complete row as before. Repeat 3rd through 6th row for pattern. Work in pattern, increasing 1 loop at both ends on each First Half of Row, until there are 28 (31, 34) loops on hook. Work even in pattern for 10 rows. Next row: Work in pattern, increasing 1 loop at both ends on First Half of Row—30 (33, 36) loops. Break off unused color.
First Side—1st row: Keeping in pattern, work over the first 8 (9, 10) sts only. Work even in pattern for 20 (23, 26) rows. Break off and fasten.
Second Side: Skip next 14 (15, 16) vertical bars at instep, attach thread to next vertical bar and work in pattern across the 8 (9, 10) sts. Now work Second Side as for First Side. Sew back seam.
Point … Keeping color pattern as established, attach thread to first free vertical bar at instep. 1st row—First Half of Row: Work in pattern across the 14 (15, 16) sts. Second Half of Row: Work in pattern across. Next 5 (5, 6) rows: Keeping in pattern, dec 1 loop at both ends on every First Half of Row. Last row—First Half of Row: Draw up a loop in each vertical bar across, thread over and draw through all loops on hook. Break off and fasten.
With wrong sides facing, pin sole to upper. Attach Brown in any st and, working through both thicknesses, sc around. Join with sl st to first sc. Turn. Sl st in each sc around. Break off and fasten.
Edging: With right side facing, attach Brown to end st of first row of First Side. 1st rnd: Sc closely around the point and entire top edge. Join. Now work in rows as follows: Ch 3, turn. 1st row: Picking up back loop only, dc in joining, 2 dc in next sc, dc in each sc across to within 2 sc at opposite base of point, 2 dc in each of next 2 sc. Turn. 2nd row: Sl st in each dc across and in top of ch-3. Break off and fasten. 3rd row: With right side facing and working in the free loop of each st of first rnd, attach Brown in first st of Second Side and sc in each sc across to within opposite base of point. Break off and fasten.
Bow: With Brown, ch 9. Work in afghan st for 16 rows, then sl st around entire edge. Join. Break off and fasten. Gather piece at center to form bow. Sew in place as shown. Complete other slipper in same way.
