Posy Slippers Pattern

Directions are given for Small Size. Changes for Medium and Large Sizes are in paren­theses.

COATS & CLARK'S O.N.T. “SPEED-CRO-SHEEN” MERCERIZED COTTON: 3 (3, 4) balls of No. 126 Spanish Red; and

J. & P. COATS “KNIT-CRO-SHEEN”: 1 ball each of No. 1 White and No. 48 Hunter's Green; 3 yards of Brown.

Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 7.

Afghan Hook No. 4 or Size F.

6 bone rings, outside diameter ½ inch.

½ yard of bead wire.

GAUGE: 7 sts = 1¼ inches; 5 rows = 1 inch.

SOLE … Starting at heel with Red and afghan hook, ch 8 (10, 12). 1st row: Work first row of Sole on Striped Slippers Pattern. 2nd and 3rd rows: Repeat 2nd row of Sole on Striped Slippers Pattern. There are 12 (14, 16) loops on First Half of last row. Next 17 (17, 18) rows: Work even, repeating 4th row of Sole on Striped Slippers Pattern. Next row: Repeat 2nd row. Work even for 4 rows. Following row: Repeat 2nd row. There are 16 (18, 20) loops on First Half of Row. Work even for 9 (12, 14) rows. Dec row—First Half of Row: Repeat Dec row of Sole on Striped Slippers Pattern. Second Half of Row: Repeat Second Half of first row. Next row: Work even. Repeat last 2 rows alternately 1 (2, 3) times more. Next 2 rows: Repeat Dec row. For Sizes Small and Medium Only: Work even for 1 row. For all Sizes: Break off and fasten.

UPPER … Starting at toe with Red and afghan hook, ch 9 (11, 13). 1st row: Re­peat first row of Sole. 2nd row—First Half of Row: Inc 1 loop in first bar, draw up a loop in each of next 3 (4, 5) bars, draw up a loop in the ch between last bar used and next bar, draw up a loop in next bar, draw up a loop in the ch between last bar used and next bar, draw up a loop in next 3 (4, 5) bars, inc 1 loop in last bar. There are 13 (15, 17) loops on hook. Second Half of Row: Repeat Second Half of first row. Next 6 (6, 7) rows: Repeat 2nd row of Sole. There are 25 (27, 31) loops on First Half of last row. Work even for 3 (4, 5) rows. Next row: Repeat 2nd row of Sole. Following row: Work even. Repeat last 2 rows alternately twice more—31 (33, 37) loops. Work even for 1 (2, 3) rows.

First Side: 1st row: Work across first 12 (12, 13) vertical bars. Work even for 23 (25, 27) rows. Break off and fasten at end of last row.

Second Side: 1st row—First Half of Row: Skip next 7 (9, 11) vertical bars at instep, attach thread in next vertical bar, draw up a loop in each bar across—12 (12, 13) loops. Second Half of Row: Work across. Work Second Side as for First Side. Sew back seam.
With wrong sides facing, pin sole in place to upper. Attach Red to lower edge of back seam and, working through both thicknesses, sc around. Join with sl st to first sc. Turn. Sl st in each sc around. Join. Break off and fasten.

Edging: With right side facing, using Red and afghan hook, attach thread to end st of first row on First Side, at instep edge, and work across instep as follows: Dc in vertical bar of first st 3 rows below, (skip vertical bar behind the dc just made, sl st in next vertical bar, dc in next vertical bar 3 rows below) 4 (5, 6) times; now work across top edge of sides as follows: Sl st in end st of first row of side, * dc in 3rd bar of next row, skip the st directly behind the dc just made, sl st in end st of next row. Repeat from * around top edge. Join to first dc. Break off and fasten.

FLOWER

NOTE: Hereafter use the No. 7 hook only.

Outer Petal—1st rnd: With White, make 20 sc over one ring. Join with sl st to first sc. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, dc in joining, make 2 dc in each sc around. Join to top of ch-3. 3rd rnd: Ch 1, sc in joining, * ch 3, sl st in last sc made, sc in next dc. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 3, sl st in last sc made. Join to first sc. Break off and fasten.

Inner Petal: Starting at center with Red, ch 2. 1st rnd: 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join to first sc. 2nd rnd: Ch 1, sc in join­ing, * draw loop on hook up to measure ½ inch, thread over and draw through loop on hook, insert hook between the ½-inch loop and the single strand be­hind it and draw a loop through, thread over and draw through all loops on hookknot st made; sc in next sc. Repeat from * around, ending with knot st. Join to first sc. Break off and fasten. Sew to center of outer petal.

Center: Starting at center with Brown, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join. Break off and fasten. Sew to center of inner petal. Draw wire through top of 2nd rnd of outer petal, then form outer petal into 3 large petals as illustrated. Make 2 more flowers.

Leaf Foundation: Starting at center with Green, ch 2. 1st rnd: 9 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join to first sc. 2nd rnd: Picking up front loop only throughout, ch 1, sc in join­ing, * ch 10, sc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across—leaf made; 2 sc in each of next 2 sc. Repeat from * around, ending with 2 sc in last sc. Join. 3rd rnd: Picking up the back loop only of each sc on first rnd, and holding leaves forward, ch 1, make 2 dc in each sc around. Join to first dc. 4th rnd: Ch 3, dc in joining, 2 dc in next dc, (dc in next dc, 2 dc in each of next 2 dc) 5 times; dc in next dc. Join to top of ch-3. 5th rnd: Ch 3, dc in joining, * ch 12, sc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across, 2 dc in next dc, dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in each of next 2 dc, dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc. Repeat from * around, ending with dc in last 3 dc. Join. Break off and fasten.
  Press foundation lightly. Sew flowers to foundation, having 4 leaves at center and 1 leaf between each flower as illus­trated. Sew tip of each outer leaf to base of same leaf. Sew in place on slipper. Complete other slipper in same way.
