Place Mat measures 12 x 18 inches

COATS & CLARK'S O.N.T. “SPEED-CRO-SHEEN” MERCERIZED COTTON: 10 balls of No. 46-A Mid Rose and 5 balls of No. 122 Watermelon (for set of 4 Place Mats).

Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 2/0 (double zero).

GAUGE: 5 sc = 1 inch; 3 rows = 1 inch.

Starting at narrow edge with Mid Rose, ch 78, having 5 ch to 1 inch. 1st row (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 7 ch, * 3 sc in next ch—2 sc increased; sc in next 8 ch, draw up a loop in each of next 3 sc, thread over and draw through all loops on hook—2 sc decreased; sc in next 8 ch. Repeat from * twice more; 3 sc in next ch—2 sc increased; sc in next 8 ch. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Working through both loops throughout, dec 1 sc over the first 2 sc, sc in next 7 sc, * 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 8 sc, dec 2 sc over the next 3 sc, sc in next 8 sc. Repeat from * twice more; 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 7 sc, dec 1 sc over last 2 sc. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Picking up back loop only throughout, repeat 2nd row. Ch 1, turn. 4th, 5th and 6th rows: Repeat 2nd, 3rd and 2nd rows, omitting turning chain on 6th row. Drop Mid Rose, attach Watermelon and draw Watermelon through loop on hook, turn. Always change colors in this way. 7th and 8th rows: Repeat 3rd and 2nd rows, omitting turning chain on 8th row. Break off Watermelon, pick up Mid Rose and change colors as before, turn. 9th row: Repeat 3rd row. Repeat last 8 rows for pattern. Work in pattern until piece measures 18 inches across long edge, ending with the 5th row of pattern. Break off and fasten.

Border: With right side facing, and working along opposite side of starting chain, attach Watermelon in first ch. 1st rnd: Sl st in each ch across first side, sl st in each st around remaining 3 sides. Join with sl st to first sl st. 2nd rnd: Picking up back loop only throughout, sc in each sl st around, decreasing 2 sts between points and increasing 2 sts at tip of each point across narrow edges. Join to first sc. Ch 1, turn. 3rd rnd: Sl st in each sc around. Join. Break off and fasten. Block to measurements.
