Beautiful wife of Louis XVI of France … she was Queen when the court of France was most dazzling.

MATERIALS—D•M•C Pearl Cotton, Art. 116D, Size 8: 2 balls Rose No. 603 or No. 604.
7½-inch Doll.
4-inch ribbon; ½ yard for Petticoat.
11-inch Hat wire and connector.
Small pearls and colored sequins.
Steel Crochet Hook, Size 8.

BODICE—Ch 13, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each remaining ch (12 sc). Row 2—Ch 3, turn, dc in 2nd sc, dc in each of next 10 sc. Rows 3 to 14—Ch 3, turn, dc in 2nd dc, dc in each of next 9 dc, dc in top ch of ch-3. Row 15—Ch 3 (mark 3rd ch with thread for later use), turn, dc in 2nd dc; complete row as before. Rpt row 3 twice.

SKIRT—Ch 1, work 3 sc around post of last dc made, working along long side of Bodice, work 3 sc in end of each row, sc in last st (49 sc). Row 2 (right side)—Ch 1, turn, sc in first sc, * [ch for 1¼ ins., sc in next sc] 3 times, [ch for 1½ ins., sc in next sc] twice, [ch 1¾ ins., sc in next sc] twice, ch 2 ins., sc in next sc, ch 2¼ ins., sc in next sc, ch 2½ ins., sc in next sc, ch 2¾ ins., sc in next sc, ch 3 ins., sc in next sc, ch 3 ins., sc in next sc, ch 2¾ ins., sc in next sc, sc 2½ ins., sc in next sc, ch 2¼ ins., sc in next sc, ch 2 ins., sc in next sc, [ch 1¾ ins., sc in next sc] twice, [ch 1½ ins., sc in next sc] twice, [ch 1¼ ins., sc in next sc] 3 times; rpt from STAR once (48 Loops in row). Fasten off. Rnd 1—From right side, work 3 sc in first 1¼-inch Loop, 3 sc in each remaining Loop, join (with slip st) in first sc (144 sc in rnd). Rnd 2 (Shell Patterns)—Ch 1, sc in joined st, ch 3, skip next 2 sts, [Shell of 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in next st, ch 3, * skip next 2 sts, sc in next st, ch 3, skip next 2 sts, Shell in next st, ch 3; rpt from STAR around, join in first sc (24 Shells). Rnd 3—Ch 7, turn, skip joined st, work a Shell in ch-2 sp of next Shell, ch 4, * dc in next sc between Shells, ch 4, Shell in ch-2 sp of next Shell, ch 4; rpt from STAR around, join in 3rd ch of ch-7. Rnds 4, 5—Ch 8, turn, * Shell in sp of next Shell, ch 5, dc in next dc between Shells, ch 5; rpt from STAR around, join in 3rd ch of ch-8. Rnds 6 to 17—Ch 9, turn, * Shell in sp of next Shell, ch 6, dc in next dc between Shells, ch 6; rpt from STAR around, join in 3rd ch of ch-9. Rnd 18—Ch 1, turn, sc in joined st, * ch 3, slip st in sc just made, ch 6, 2 dc in sp of next Shell, ch 5, slip st in 4th ch from hook, ch 1, 2 more dc in same sp, ch 6, sc in next dc between Shells; rpt from STAR around ending with ch-6, join in first sc, fasten off.

SHOULDER RUFFLE—Working along top of Bodice, work 1 sc in marked ch, ch 10 (for shoulder), skip next 2 rows, sc in end st of next row, skip next 2 rows, Shell of 9 tr in end st of next row, skip next 2 rows, sc in next row (this sc is center front), skip 2 rows, Shell in next row, skip 2 rows, sc in next row, ch 10 (for shoulder), skip 2 rows, sc in next row, ch 1, slip st around post of next row. Row 2—Ch 1, turn, tr in ch-10 Loop, * ch 3, sc in top of tr just made, tr in same ch-10 Loop; rpt from STAR 13 times, skip first 2 tr of next Shell, slip st in each of next 7 tr of same Shell, slip st in next sc between Shells, slip st in each of first 7 tr of next Shell, tr in next ch-10 Loop; work 2nd Shoulder Ruffle to correspond. Fasten off. Run a matching drawstring thru waistline. Steam lightly. Wire Hoop—Join 11-inch Hat wire with connector into circle, bend to oval shape (2½ ins. by 4½ ins.) having connector at center of flat side of oval. Work a row of sc around wire (working sts closely so as to cover wire), join in first sc, fasten off. From wrong side, sew Wire Hoop to rnd one of Skirt having 1¼-in. Loops at center of flat sides and 3-in. Loops at center of round ends. Put dress on Doll, sew back seam; tighten drawstring to fit waistline, tie knot.

PETTICOAT—Sew ends of 4-inch ribbon together, run a shirring drawstring ¼-inch from one edge, put on Doll and tighten drawstring to fit waist, tie knot.

MITTS—Ch 19, dc in 5th ch from hook, * ch 1, skip 1 ch, dc in next ch; rpt from STAR across (8 sps). Rows 2 to 6—Ch 4, turn, dc in 2nd dc, [ch 1, 1 dc] in each remaining dc, ch 1, dc in 3rd ch of ch-4. Row 7—Ch 6, turn, sc in 4th ch from hook, dc in 2nd dc, * ch 4, sc in 4th ch from hook, dc in next dc; rpt from STAR across working last dc in 3rd ch of ch-4, fasten off. Working on other side of foundation ch work 1 sc in each of first 3 sps, ch 1, skip next sp, [Shell of 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 tr, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc] in next st, ch 1, skip next sp, sc in each of next 3 sps, fasten off. Sew seams, slip Mitts on hands. Decorate with pearls and sequins and arrange scrap of feather (or other decoration) in hair as shown. Fasten scrap of suitable fabric to hand for handkerchief.
