This design is a crocheted adaptation of an authentic Early American quilt pattern of the same name.

Afghan measures 41 x 61 inches … Motifs measure 5 inches square.

COATS & CLARK'S RED HEART KNITTING WORSTED, 4 Ply, Art. E. 234 (4 oz. "Tangle-Proof" Pull-Out Skeins): 4 skeins each of No. 791 Mid Coral, No. 1 White and No. 12 Black.
Aluminum or Plastic Crochet Hook, Size G.

FIRST MOTIF (Make 24) … With Mid Coral, ch 20 to measure 5¼ inches. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (19 sc). Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Skip first sc, dc in next 18 sc. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Sc in first 18 dc, sc in top of turning chain (19 sc). Ch 3, turn. Next 10 rows: (Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows) 5 times. Break off at end of last row.
SECOND MOTIF (Make 24) … With White work exactly as for First Motif.
THIRD MOTIF (Make 24) … With Black, ch 26 to measure 7¼ inches. First Half—1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (25 sc). Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Skip first sc, holding back on hook the last loop of each dc, dc in next 2 sc, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook (2 dc worked off as 1 dc); dc in each sc across to within last 3 sc; work off 3 dc as 1 dc over the last 3 sc. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Draw up a loop in first 2 dc, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook (2 sc worked off as 1 sc); sc in each dc across to within last 2 dc (do not count turning chain as 1 st); work off 2 sc as 1 sc over last 2 dc. Ch 3, turn. Next 5 rows: Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately. 9th row: Work off 3 sc as 1 sc over remaining 3 dc. Break off. Second Half—1st row: Working along opposite side of starting chain, attach white in first sc and sc in each ch across (25 sc). Ch 3, turn. 2nd to 9th rows incl: Repeat 2nd to 9th rows incl of First Half.
FOURTH MOTIF (Make 24) … Using Black for First Half and Mid Coral for Second Half work exactly as for Third Motif.
Following Diagram, sew motifs together to form 6 blocks. Sew 2 x 3 blocks together.
BORDER … 1st rnd (right side): With Black, sc closely around, making 3 sc in each corner. Join with sl st to first sc. 2nd rnd: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, making 3 sc in each corner. Join and break off. Block to measurements.
