COATS & CLARK'S RED HEART KNITTING WORSTED, 4 Ply, Art. E. 234 (4 oz. "Tangle-Proof" Pull-Out Skeins): 3 skeins of No. 12 Black, 5 skeins of No. 950 Mexicana and 5 skeins of No. 491 Pearl Grey.
Aluminum or Plastic Crochet Hook, Size H.

FIRST MOTIF … Starting at center with Mexicana, ch 5. Join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 1, 12 sc in ring. 2nd rnd: Sl st loosely in 12 sc. 3rd rnd: Picking up the back loop only of each sc on first rnd, * sl st in next sc, ch 4 to measure 1 inch, (yarn over, draw up a 1-inch loop in same sc) twice; in next sc make (yarn over, draw up a 1-inch loop) twice; yarn over and draw through all loops on hook, ch 4, sl st in same sc (puff st made). Repeat from * around (6 puff sts). Break off. 4th rnd: Attach Pearl Grey to top of any puff st, ch 1, sc in same place, * ch 2, tr in same place as first sl st of next puff st was made, ch 2, sc in top of puff st. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 2. Join to first sc. 5th rnd: Ch 4, * in each of the next 2 sps make (sc, ch 1) twice; dc in next sc, ch 1. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 1. Join to 3rd ch of ch-4. Break off. 6th rnd: Attach Black in sp preceding any dc on 5th rnd, ch 1, in same sp make sc, ch 1 and sc (corner sp made); * (ch 1, sc in next sp) 4 times; ch 1, in next sp make sc, ch 1 and sc (another corner). Repeat from * around, ending with ch 1. Join and break off (6 corners).
SECOND MOTIF … Work exactly as for First Motif until 5 rnds have been completed. 6th rnd: Attach Black in sp preceding any dc on 5th rnd, ch 1, sc in same sp; sc in any corner sp on First Motif; sc in same sp on Second Motif (ch 1, sc in next sp on Second Motif) twice; skip next 2 sps on First Motif and sc in next sp; on Second Motif make (sc in next sp, ch 1) twice and sc in next sp; sc in next corner sp on First Motif; sc in same sp on Second Motif, ch 1 and complete rnd (no more joinings). Now, continue to work as for Second Motif, following diagram for joining, until all motifs have been joined, joining sc's where necessary to previous joinings.
BORDER … 1st rnd (right side): Attach Black in any free corner sp, ch 1, * sc in next sp, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join and break off. Attach Pearl Grey in any sp. 2nd and 3rd rnds: * Sc in sp, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Break off at end of 3rd rnd. Block to measurements.
