Tulip Garden Afghan Pattern

Quick-to-make squares sewed together and decorated with gay tulips and green leaves appliquéd in bright bouquets.

COATS & CLARK'S "RED HEART" KNITTING WORSTED, 4 Ply, Art. E. 234 (4 oz. "Tangle-Proof" Pull-Out Skeins): 15 skeins of No. 679 Nile Green and 1 skein of No. 588 Amethyst; and

COATS & CLARK'S "RED HEART" KNITTING WORSTED, 4 Ply, Art. E. 230-B (2 oz. "Tangle-Proof" Pull-Out Skeins): 3 skeins of No. 686 Paddy Green and
2 skeins of No. 676 Emerald.

Crochet Hook Size G.

Afghan measures 50 x 68 inches ... Motifs measure 6 inches square

GAUGE: 11 dc = 2¾ inches; 6 rows = 2¾ inches.

SQUARE (Make 88) ... Starting at lower edge with Nile Green ch 24 to measure 6 inches. 1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across—22 dc, counting turning chain as 1 dc. Ch 3, turn. Next 11 rows: Skip first dc, dc in each dc across and in top of turning chain—22 dc. Ch 3, turn. At end of last row omit turning chain. Do not break off. Sc closely around square making 3 sc in each corner. Break off and fasten.

LEAF MOTIF A

LARGE LEAF (Make 72) ... With Paddy Green ch 14. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next ch, h dc in next ch, dc in next 8 ch, h dc in next ch, 2 sc in last ch; working along opposite side of starting chain, make h dc in next ch, dc in next 8 ch, h dc in next ch, sc in next 2 ch, sl st in tip. Break off and fasten.

SMALL LEAF (Make 48) ... With Emerald ch 14. Working across one side of chain only, work as for Large Leaf, ending with 1 sc in last ch. Break off and fasten.

STEM (Make 24) ... With double strand of Paddy Green make a chain 3 inches long. Break off and fasten. Sew 3 Large and 2 Small Leaves al­ternating as shown to one square; sew stem in place. Make 24 leaf motifs.

TULIP MOTIF B

TULIP PETAL (Make 72) ... With Amethyst ch 11. Dc in 4th ch from hook and in next 5 ch, h dc in next ch, 2 sc in last ch; working along opposite side of starting chain make h dc in next ch, dc in next 6 ch, ch 3, sl st in last ch used. Break off and fasten.

LEAF (Make 48) ... With Paddy Green work as for Small Leaf of Leaf Motif.

STEM (Make 24) ... Work as for stem of Leaf Motif. Sew 3 petals to form a tulip as shown to one square. Sew 2 leaves and stem in place. Make 24 tulip motifs.

BLOCK (Make 12) ... Arranging motifs as shown on diagram above, stems meeting at center, sew 2 Tulip and 2 Leaf motifs neatly together.
Following diagram sew blocks and plain motifs alternating together.

BORDER ... 1st rnd: With right side facing attach Nile Green to any sc, ch 3 and dc closely around, making 5 dc in each corner. Join with sl st to top of ch-3. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, skip first dc, dc in each dc around, mak­ing 5 dc in each corner st. Join and turn. 3rd rnd (wrong side): Sl st in each st around. Join. Break off and fasten. Block to measurements.
