Materials: Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, Size 10. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 5, 6 or 7. A runner 17 x 70 inches requires:
4 balls of Color 106 Sport Green
9 balls of Color 80 Dark Linen
15 balls of Color 58 Dark Red

Make the 24 squares firstly, 12 on each end to form the border. Each square is made separately, then joined together. In working the squares and the stripes, pick up the black loop only of each st. SQUARE. With Dark Red, ch 9, join to form ring. Ch 3 (to count as d c), 23 d c in ring (24 d c in all). Join with sl st to 3rd ch of ch-3 first made. 2nd rnd: Ch 3 (to count as d c), d c in each of next 5 d c, ch 7, * d c in each of next 6 d c, ch 7. Repeat from * twice more. Join with sl st to 3rd ch of ch-3 first made. Break off. 3rd rnd: Attach Sport Green. S c in each st of previous rnd. In 4th ch of corner ch-7, make 2 s c with ch-1 between. Join. 4th rnd: S c in each s c. In corner ch-1 make 2 s c with ch-1 between. Join. Break off. 5th rnd: Attach Dark Linen. Make a d c in each st of previous rnd. In corner ch-1 make 2 d c with ch-5 between. There should be 18 d c at each side. Join. 6th rnd: D c in each st. In 3rd ch of corner ch-5 make 2 d c with ch-5 between (24 d c at each side). Join. Break off. 7th rnd: Attach Dark Red, s c in each st of previous rnd. In 3rd ch of corner ch-5 make 2 s c with ch-1 between. This completes a square. Sew 12 squares together for each end, as shown in illustration. Then work around the 12 joined squares a row of s c with Dark Red. Break thread. Then work across row of 6 squares, as follows: 1st row: Attach Sport Green, ch 1, s c in each st of previous row. Break off. 2nd row: Attach Dark Linen. Ch 3 (to count as d c), d c in each st of previous row. Break off. 3rd row: Attach Dark Red. Ch 3 (to count as d c), d c in each st of previous row. Break off. 4th row: Attach Dark Linen. S c in each st of previous row. Break off. 5th row: Attach Dark Red, and work as for 3rd row. Break. 6th row: Attach Dark Linen, and work as for 2nd row. Break. 7th row: Attach Sport Green, and work as for 1st row. Break. 8th row: From here on work with Dark Red, d c in each st of previous row. 9th row: Ch 3, d c in each of next 3 d c, * ch 2, skip 2 d c, d c in each of next 10 d c. Repeat from * across row, ending with 4 d c. 10th row: Ch 3, d c in each of next 3 d c, * 2 d c in sp, d c in each of next 4 d c, ch 2, skip 2 d c, d c in each of next 4 d c. Repeat from * across row. 11th row: Same as 9th row. 12th row: Same as 10th row. 13th row: D c in each d c, and 2 d c in each sp. Break off. HEADING FOR FRINGE. 14th row: With Dark Linen, s c in each st of previous row, ch 5, turn. 15th row: * Skip 2 s c, d c in next, ch 2. Repeat from * across. Ch 5, turn. 16th and 17th rows: Make sp over sp. TO MAKE FRINGE. Knot 9 strands of Dark Linen into each sp. This completes one end of runner. Attach Sport Green at other side of 6 squares, and repeat from 1st to 10th rows to make stripes, then work 9th and 10th rows alternately for length desired. Finish other end as this one.
